Rudbeckia is a good flower to start with. They are hardy and keep coming back year after year.

Yes. I didn't realize how common it is out there.
I'm probably going to fill in that area with some shrubs--probably more of the holly. Something for the birds. At this time, I'm thinking that I'll move the wildflowers to another area. Will see how that works.

    Beauty and the Beetle

Japanese beetle munching on the flower. Just left of center.

This was why I started feeding the birds.

This was the day we had significant Saharan dust. Overcast like that all day

Did feeding the birds help with the beetles?

In fact I did that day. I caught a roughly 20-in snook which I immediately released and that was right near where my boat is.

Then I departed from that place and headed back towards the boat ramp and dropped anchor in a lagoon and fish for a bit and caught this mangrove snapper and redfish.

    They went home with me.

IMG_20240716_181407.jpg My first melon. A Charleston Grey about 10 pounds? Delicious sweet. It won't hurt to leave the others in the field. But this one is super sweet.

I started to buy melon today at Winn-Dixie for $6 and they look like small ones that should be sweet with a nice field spot but they were seedless and I put it right back where I found it.

Enjoy some random pictures from my recent fishing outings on a kayak. Was wondering why it was overcast all that day but did not rain... Turns out it was Saharan dust

IMG_20240711_122544547.jpg ( above photo located much closer to the Gulf on placida )

This day was big water on the kayak. ( Photos below ) Underneath the interstate 75 where it passes over the Peace River in Charlotte harbor. I ain't going back without a real boat. At one point I was anchored in 15 ft of water fishing and it got very choppy and after about 50 minutes of that.... I was ready to go somewhere less choppy. That water is just as black as it can be.

You become aware of your fragility sitting out in such conditions in a small plastic boat. 9 ft bull sharks are certainly out in those Waters. Should you find yourself overboard it would be a long swim back to land. Self rescuing on a kayak should be practiced by anyone who does such excursions.

I have managed to get in and out of the boat without tipping it and all of my gear in 4 ft of water (glad there was no witnesses because it wasn't very graceful ).... Not sure if I could manage it out there in that choppy water though. If I did I would surely lose any gear that wasn't strapped down.... But you're supposed to strap everything down that you're not willing to lose.

I don't like seedless watermelon either. Thanks for the pics.

I used to fish a lot. But it was northern Indiana lake fishing. Nothing tastier than Indiana bluegill.

Pretty much solved the problem. Way better than bug spray and all the other things we're told to do. Still some occasional beetles like the one in the photo, but I seem to have more birds than beetles. That's why I keep the feeders and birdbath full.

Sample of the birds that come to the feeders. upload_2024-7-19_9-8-54.jpeg I try to keep at least three feeds with seeds.

Me too. I have about five feeders, but only keep two or three out at a time. They love the black oil sunflower seeds. And they love beetles.
