Reminds me of my road. It's a dead end, and we live on a cul-de-sac on that road. How's that for a metaphor?

The last part isn't paved, and there are signs warning people to "Keep Out". But I've walked the road here daily for over 20 years, and everyone knows me. That gives me a pass. They're good people who've had issues with people coming on to their property to fish (it's on a lake).

    Those are some awesome photos.

Much of the area is old farm land. Fading in time

Those old folks up in the sky said HI to me.

Hope everyone is having a Merry Christmas. Let's see what the new year brings.

Tell the old folks I said hello and to hold down the fort until our arrival. My sweet and dearest lovely woman has gone to be with our Lord and savior at 9:24 p.m. in hospice last night.

I will miss her so but I will try to live my life well as I know that is what she wanted. Goodbye Debbie.

Oh, My God! I'm so sorry to hear that. That's got to be hard to deal with.

We all live in beautiful places. It's just a matter of learning to see the beauty. It's all what you make it.

The photo of your bike on the bridge is a powerful image that can suggest many things. The simple beauty of the area. The crossing from one part of life to another. The peacefulness. The fact that you can leave the bike while you walk around and take photos. All kinds of suggestions from what is there. What you see is what your mind will let you see. Hope you find peace.

It is and it isn't... The last two years of her life have basically been nothing but pain and depression and doctor's appointments.

Some people say it is hard to deal with on this day but I like to think of it as a blessing.... To die on the eve the birth of our Lord and savior Christ, surely that must be a blessing.

I will live at peace because I know that is what she wanted.

You speak wise words, once upon a time I used to go meditate with some Buddhist monks that lived in Tampa..... We were sitting outside talking one day and I told one of them that their garden was beautiful and they told me that it was nothing but weeds.... Well.... Beauty is where you find it.

I just hope and pray that we can all cross that bridge one day as peacefully as she did. She got there about 12:30 and they unhooked her from the ventilator at 3:30.
After everyone was there and she was plenty of cognizant to say goodbye to everyone, she last closed her eyes at about 4:45 p.m. and at 9:24 p.m. she slipped away from this world.

They kept giving her morphine on the hour, that is how I know that she slipped right on past the devil because never once did she display any discomfort and I can only hope I meet my same demise one day in a similar manner

I can sort of see what you're saying. When my father died, it was more of a blessing in the sense that his life had become such a misery. He had Alzheimer's but in the end it was cancer that killed him. I felt bad for thinking that his death was a relief from the endless battle to keep him medicated, cleaned, and comfortable. He was not the man I knew before he got sick. I sincerely hope that my family would never go through that because of me.

The Buddhist thing is really awesome. I'm not Buddhist, but I've read a few books on the philosophy. When I was younger, the idea of learning to meditate and all that didn't appeal to me because my mind wouldn't shut up long enough to do that. I'm 68 now, and since I retired, I've spent a lot of my time making those Buddhist connections between me and my environment. Still not a Buddhist, though. I want to do things my way, not the way someone else tells me. But I really do buy into the idea that my world is my creation. And I have an ancient rocking chair on the porch for my new-found style of meditation. Not sure what to call it. Maybe adfundamentalism?

Her life these last 2 years consisted of nothing but pain and depression and doctor's appointments and the occasional trip up the road a bit to the dollar store.

She had a choice to either go to hospice or go into long-term hospital nursing care on the ventilator. She asked me what she should do and I told her I can't really tell you but I can only tell you what I would do. Nobody wants to live hooked up to a machine and dependent upon it.

I'm not a terribly religious sort but over 20 years ago I had what most people would call a near-death experience and words can utterly fail to describe it competently but suffice it to say that I believe there is a man upstairs and there is something better to come when we leave this place.

I don't really call it a near-death experience because I'm not Dead. I can't prove it to anyone, but I know what I experienced. Life is hard enough without looking up there and thinking that we're just alone. This whole great scheme of things can't be an accident and there must be some intelligence behind it.

One day we shall all see.

Meditation is probably the hardest thing in life, the mind is like an unruly child that will not sit still. What a blessing it is just to have a quiet mind.

And @Adfundum you should never feel bad or guilty about the relief that your father's death meant for the both of you.

It is hard to care for someone physically and it's even more difficult when their mind goes first. Debbie's mother died with dementia as well and Debbie herself had a few episodes but fortunately, she never developed a full-blown case.

One morning she asked me how did she get in here.... And I said who, and she spoke her niece's name and I told her that I can promise you that we are the only two people in this house.

So I dealt with a few episodes but nothing like someone who cared for someone with full on dementia. God bless you and God rest your father.
