Conservatives opposed this in 2021 and praised Sinema and Manchin for preventing it. I expect there will be a lot of support among Republican senators to get rid of it since there aren’t enough to overcome it.

Liberals hissed and shrieked at Manchin and Sinema for not voting to get rid of it. Fast forward to today, I imagine we’re going to hear how the filibuster is a check on the tyranny of the majority from those same liberals.

I want the Senate to keep it.

    Should Republicans eliminate the filibuster?

Absolutely not. We need to make legislation harder, not easier.

The filibuster is as stupid as the electoral college.

I agree. As big a pain in the butt as it can be, it taps the brakes when the leading party goes crazy. And yes that applies to either party.

Said by someone who doesn't understand government checks and balances.a That they don't suit you doesn't make them stupid. They exist for good reason.

agreed. It’s easy to say things like “pack the court”, “ignore the parliamentarian”, or “eliminate the filibuster” when you think you’ll be in power forever.

but as Harry Reed found out before he croaked, the other side will eventually run things again.

Does the filibuster keep government in check....or give unearned power to the minority?

Allowing 40% of the Senate stop progress isn't very democratic.

No, it is to limit the majority mob power in the Senate.

In other words, we need to keep it because if the hard left opposes it, it is most useful

So all we need to do to get things done is to oppose it. Good to know.

Keep it...no matter who has the majority. Because no party should have the majority in the House, Senate and WH. That is too much power for one party.

and yet we have a lot of big programs passed via Reconciliation, which requires only 51 Senate votes.

So you want a slim Republican Party in the Senate to be able to pass all of it's legislative agenda without even bothering to compromise with Democrats?

No one wants a run away government...but also no one wants a duly elected government that can't pass its agenda.

I feel like we can bounce around ideas that can compromise the issue.

Imo a Party that has won both the electoral and plurality of voters with both houses of Congress has satisfied the threshold by which they should not be filibustered.

Lose any of the above, and the filibuster remains.

Alright then. I’ve changed my mind. Let’s make it a criminal offense to be democrat. Then we can rid the country of them altogether.

They will have the House. They will have the White House. They will have the Senate.

A commitment to democracy, meaning 51% gets to set the agenda, means GOP can pass bills without super-majority.

And the same when Democrats take over again.

Constitution says nothing about requiring a super-majority in the Senate to pass laws. It only says one Senator may stand up and speak so as to delay votes. That Senator can be overruled by 90 votes, 70 votes, 55 votes, its up to Senate to decide for themselves every year.

I'm opposed to doing away with the filibuster. Democrats tried to end it and failed, but they effectively said they would have gotten rid of it if Democrats maintained control of the Senate with Manchin retiring.

My fear is that this is going to be a game of chicken. Republicans know as soon as Democrats ever get control again they are going to spike the filibuster and push through an agenda that couldn't otherwise pass. So will they do it now after the Democrats have already played their hand? Democrats won't really be able to complain because they have been trying to get rid of it for years. That is what they want. But this is probably one of those things like expanding the Supreme Court, they only support it if they'll benefit.

The 60 vote rule applies only to ending filibusters, not everything the Senate does.
