Here's hard to believe that 6 out of 15 votes cast say "yes." It shows how little history people are learning these days. Even Andrew Jackson knew this was a dangerous path to take in the late 1820s. Lincoln gave his life to save the Union.

An 1832 presidential campaign token ... "The Union must and shall be preserved."

Republican/ Conservative/ Libertarian/American Nationalist wrap themselves with American Flag and “ make America Great Again”. But every time majority Americans disagree with them they want to Secede. Really? what happened to your patriotism?

You think Federal Government is the enemy ? Federal Government is the UNITED STATES OF AMERICA.

There's a historical precedent on states trying to leave the Union. It ended poorly last time.

I think a war that cost over 600,000 lives settled the matter.

So the former Confederate states then be allowed to sue for reparations for all the destruction that was reigned down on them when they succeeded?

Sure, as long as it is complete.

Passports needed to enter, NO US government aid in disasters unless the request is treated like any aid request from a foreign country.

People from the US wishing to work there must have a green card....or whatever else they need to work legally.

Their own military funded by their own residents.

And adherence to any pact, treaty, agreement that other foriegn countries must adhere to.....and anything else a foreign country has to do.

Don't know what that has to do with my post you quoted....and, LOL, what did they "succeed" at .....:roflol::roll:

The question is complicated and is not a simple yes or no question.
But most people prefer thinking in terms of simple black and white because it's mentally easy. There could be valid reasons for a state to leave, but it can also be very impractical for a state to try to leave, especially if it is in the middle of the country and being protected by virtue of being surrounded by the rest of the country.
Most likely a single state would not leave but several states would leave together, like what happened just before the U.S. Civil War. The bad thing is the outcome of the Civil War didn't end up setting a good precedent for states rights. Had the war not happened, states today would probably be seen as having a greater degree of sovereignty.

I think here is a case where principles (Does a state have the right to leave?) should not be looked at in isolation. The overall situation needs to be looked at.

You will also notice the original U.S. Constitution did not clearly state whether a state has the right to leave or not, and that may have been intentional. A state probably does, under some circumstances, but not in others. Assigning the correct outcome in a Constitution may not always be the best thing. We can't always foresee and predict what the right thing to do in a future situation will be.

Some people desire a framework of law that will ensure world peace, but I would ask at what cost is that? The country was founded on the premise that the natural right existed to be able to fight for rights. Otherwise the American states would not have separated from Great Britain.

I'm just going to assume that secessionists are Russian Trolls. It saves a lot of time.

take their percent of the debt with them, divide the debt by the number of states and that is the debt they can buy their State for

You are not aware of the Civil War and the destruction reigned down on the Southern States because the seceded from the Union. They were invaded by a Union army hell bent on it's destruction and the damage and losses were MASSIVE.

So if we now allow states to secede should those states receive compensation for that destruction?

A questioned that was answered to the tune of over 600,000 deaths and untold losses to the Southern States so if you are going to to say yes then be prepared to reimburse those states for those losses.

You just can't admit you forgot about history and the question of secession already being decided, states can't secede from the union.

What bit of history do you think they're missing? Perhaps they know the history, but still disagree with what Lincoln did. If one believes in the right to self-determination, of course there should be a way for states to secede rather than stay due to threat of force. But I agree with others that it shouldn't be easy to do given shared obligations, but even hard it should be fully up to the people in that state and not others.

History tells us Lincoln and the Union didn't let them. Doesn't mean all future politicians must agree.

There must be a statewide referendum.

Secession must win by 60% or more.

At least 51% of registered voters must have voted.

Must then be approved by 51% of both houses of Congress. President no need to approve.

We didn't need King George's approval to leave the British Empire... we just did it. States (colonies) had the power to strike out on their own then... and they still do. And, by the way, the South is no longer the agrarian society it was then. Look where F-22's are made, where NASA operates, where most of the Army resides. Its not your great-grandpa's south anymore.

He set the precedent which he and the United States says that is what the Constitution says. If the the President and the United States made a mistake then surely they owe reparations for the destruction they reigned down on states that seceded.
