    ROTFLMAO!!

    What a great idea.

    Did you make that?
    Yes.

    Can I try it?
No, but Oooo look how nice it looks with the leather and all.

I should put fancy beads on it to distract from the fact it makes no sound other than rushing air. Its like a Native American....hey wait maybe I can make a pipe out of it.

Ahhh, I see. Must've missed that part. What's next, pottery?

I've never been very good at crafty stuff. Had a whole closet full of half-finished projects that I finally threw away. If it takes longer than 10 min, I'm prob not gonna finish it.

Won't make a sound, huh? Did you try sucking instead of blowing?

    Just sayin... works sometimes.

I have a whole collection of whittled sticks. Heavy ones I've made on Boy Scout camping trips. But they're mostly beat-the-crap-outta-you sticks. Some are back scratchers.

OH WOW! GOOD FOR YOU G/F! I am so proud! :date:I have 4 yrs now. My BIL is 40 days, my other friend has two days. She just keeps forgetting and lights up.
It is so hard and I am pulling for you. Straws help so much. So do those plastic tooth pick thingys. I have bought boxes of them and got hand full of them at restaurants.
    So, how long?

Nor me. Not like my girlfriend is, anyway - I don't have the patience she does. She'll spend hours just sitting in front of the TV doing som craft thing or other, often for no real reason. Her main thing is carving lovespoons and the like, though, and she's done some fantastic stuff. This is the spoon she carved for me (out of a single flat piece of wood):

I wish I had her talent!

Edited to add - this is probably a better photo of it, with the lighter added in for scale (the one above is it hanging in its place on the living room wall):

Here's a couple more photos of her work:

Each of those was carved from one piece of wood, including the hearts at the top of the first spoon, which have to be split from each other so they move freely and interlock (always a tricky process that could ruin the whole work if it goes wrong - I stay well out of the way when she's doing that bit!). For the spoons she cuts the general shape out of the plank with a band saw, and from then on everything is done entirely by hand using craft knifes, files, etc.. The little figure was cut and carved completely by hand from a square block.

Thx, changed!! Had my last cig at 10 pm on new year's eve so it's been 10 days. You know what finally made me determined to quit? When I noticed I didn't even remember smoking that last cigarette, esp when on the computer. Just do it outta habit. What's the sense of that? Hell, I could be whittling sticks in between posts and it'd be the same thing. (well, nearly)

Still looking for cinnamon toothpicks.. the kind that come in little wax paper bags. Might have to break down and make my own... but it won't be the same.

Fascinating about the wood carving, Cen! And thx for the explanation, Gypz! Never heard of love spoons. (well, not in this context anyway!) Beautiful work... does she ever sell her carvings? Shame not to share that talent with the world!

Where's OT? That rascal must be sleeping in today. Guess I'll make breakfast.

    What's yer pleasure???

They're very traditional items in Wales, and there's a whole set of traditional elements that are used in them to represent different things. The top one in the second post is a fairly traditional 'wedding' spoon, the second one is slightly a more 'modern' design (but still quite 'traditional', if you see what I mean!), with the Welsh dragon and daffodil.

The snake one is obviously something much more unusual (unique, as far as I know) that she carved at my suggestion. There are lots of lovespoon carvers around, but not many I have seen that work entirely by hand like her (rather than machine-sanding and so on - you can spot 'machined' ones fairly easily because they look 'too perfect'), and have her attention to detail (each of those works represents many, many hours of toil) and I've never seen anyone carve completely non-traditional spoons like the snake (which I absolutely love!).

It does have its drawbacks, though - mostly to do with fairly regular (mostly minor) injuries, and the scars to go with them. She does most of the carving with a knife like this:

It isn't really designed for such intricate work, but she finds it the most comfortable to work with. Slipping even slightly with it tends to result in blood being drawn!
