Reality? Among the left? I will bet you have never seen a unicorn either. I am awaiting the development of the Magic wand that will fix it all.

Any study funded by the Joyce Foundation is biased and to be taken with a grain of salt.

A suppressed M4 is still very loud and the round being supersonic doesn't suppress very well.

Simo Häyhä killed 505 men in the Winter War with nothing but a Mosin Nagant with iron sights. Marksmanship isn't all about kit.

generally speaking there are quite a few "sniper" rifles out there that are dam accurate right out of the box and accuracy/distance is even better with mods. do we "need" them ? probably not, but my 20 year old suv probably doesn't "need" to go 110mph, but it can.

That's talking Loooong distance when I say a few, if you are talking 300ish yards, then there are multiple options from what I understand. Personally I can't shoot anything over 100 yards worth a dam and I can't see very well either so even if I had a super duper long distance firearm and the proper ammo, If you were 300 yards away you could stand there and do this :cheerleader:and i'll probably miss you several times before getting lucky.

    Is a real thing.

The idea is not really to kill everybody, but to cause as much disruption as possible. In fact, wounding 1 or 2 people can cause more damage to a small unit then killing them.

Kill somebody, and they are dead. The unit can ignore or abandon the body, and it will be understood.

But wound them? Well, now you have a screaming person who needs medical care. Then needs to be helped or carried away to safety. And if they are in an open position, you can then wound each person who tries to go out and bring them to safety.

Many snipers use these tactics. A successful sniper does not simply "kill people", he does whatever they can to degrade or destroy the mission effectiveness of the target military unit.

And that may be best accomplished by simply wounding 2 or 3 people then moving on.

The same thing applies to other equipment. Shoot the tires or radiator to damage or destroy vehicles. Shoot holes in the fuel truck bringing diesel to a remote outpost so they have to ration what they have. Even shoot out street lights to provide more dark areas for cover or to conduct an ambush from.

Many people make the mistake of calling any rifle with a powerful scope a sniper rifles. Sniper rifles are usually much more powerful and use larger caliber rounds than your typical rifle.

Most "sniper rifles" are 7.62x51, 7.62x54R, or 7.62x63
Some are in the .338 class, but these are in the minority.
    Even fewer are in 50BMG
    So.... no.

You are mixing up a "Designated Marksman" rifle with a sniper rifle. Most true sniper rifles who high caliber rounds.

Look at any TRUE sniper battalion, and they tends to use .338 or higher. The Remmington rifles use by Marine Scout Snipers are usualy fitted for 338, for example.

Why? It is not like the US is the only country that has snipers.

Heck, the sniper rifle we used for the longest was the .30-06 M1903 Springfield. These were not finally retired form service until after the Vietnam War.

Carlos Hathcock became a legend on the M1903.

    LoL a 10/22 sniper rifle.

Well, it's either their inability to hit their target, the slightly-higher-than-a-pellet gun wounds, or the fact that the max effective range would be about 100 yards.

It's hilarious that those are called sniper rifles.

    Sniping gophers maybe.

The spinning round doesn't know what it has emerged from; it just goes, knowing nothing.

Wellllll, that may give you more accuracy with really good ammo, but you're still dealing with the limitations of .22LR.
