I was watching some clips from Star Trek The Next Generation on YouTube, and I was struck by how outdated they were in sentiment and attitude.

Can't link to them. Copyright rules forbid it.

This show would never be shown today. Too old-fashioned with troublesome gender stereotypes and male chauvinism. What a difference a few decades makes. It's funny because it was considered modern and edgy when it first came on in the 1980s.

If you can keep in mind that a starship's Captain Picard was as queer as a three dollar bill then you can accept all the other BS the writers were throwing at you.

I agree that that's outdated but I think that's its appeal.

First way we can determine it that's outdated it's not absolutely terribly boring that's the first way you can tell it's outdated. The second even though it has a message it's not an incredibly stupid message and it doesn't feel like you're sitting at a church being lectured by some at a touch pious jackass.

Yeah it's out of date because it's not terrible entertainment now apparently has to be terrible.

Can't link to them. Copyright rules forbid it.
I would say it would never even be made today because the person that made it had to be talented. The actors in it had to emote and depict emotions for people to be able to understand

The men are competent so that's outdated we can't have competent men anymore.

But the major part of it that's outdated is that it's entertaining that's not allowed we have to make brain dead for the dumbest people on the planet now that's the kind of entertainment that the companies that do that make.

It did take from an existing property and totally change it but they added rather than subtracted so that's very similar to modern entertainment but normally you would take a Star Trek and do what they did with Discovery make it this horrible abortion that absolutely sucks.

It wouldn't be shown today cuz it's too good that's the major issue.

No it's not enough that the actor is LGBT the character has to be and he has to have a partner and they have to do tongue kisses every episode.

Forget storyline that's not important we don't do that anymore

Peak Star Trek. A reminder of times when people were ****ing normal.

Now a days? Too many straight white men in lead roles. Even with a diverse enough cast.

I would say too many good looking people and too many talented actors.

These days what they do is they take good looking people and do everything they can to make them look like frumps or make them look hideous. And they like to give them the acting coaching of pretend you are a piece of wood.

There's a current abortion that they're calling Star Trek mostly just to capture fans of Star Trek that tricked them into watching this garbage. Strange new worlds one of the latest ones is the best one out of the bunch but I would say it's not even as good as a Voyager. They have all these fancy digital animation effects which is just the word for cartoon which is really quite impressive but beyond that it's not interesting

Strange new worlds pretends to be good but it's mediocre at best they have picked a plank of wood to play where the original Star Trek had a fantastic actress playing that role and they beat them to the black woman thing by about 50 years. They have added on some lesbian character because gay representation. Spark is terrible Scotty's not that good bones is decent but that's an easy character to be. Captain pike is not a captain.

Ya discovery and Picard sucked. I didn't mind strange new worlds. It's the closet thing that feels like old trek.

LOL, I like the old movies and TV series. Of course, I’m an old fart who doesn’t watch much TV these days. I still like the old 1950’s and 60’s scifi movies and shows. I have the original Star Trek on DVD with Shatner and Nimoy. The spinoffs, Star Trak TNC, Voyager, Deep Space Nine all the rest, I never cared for and hadn’t watch many of them. I watch a lot of history, documentaries, etc, stream them via Discovery Plus, The History Vault, Amazon Prime and others. I hate the commercials; streaming is the way to go. I especially like watching the old Hammer Horror flicks, especially if Christopher Lee is in them.

They can show whatever they want today, it doesn’t bother me. I’m set in my ways. I do like some comedies like Night Court, Barney Miller, but still stream the old shows, Red Skelton, Carol Burnet, even some of Ed Sullivan and George Goebles along with Groucho Marx’s You bet your life.

Today’s shows and movies seem to be without context and plot relying solely on special effects. But you’re probably right, none of these oldies would ever make today’s TV. Now I’m going back to the original Battlestar Galactica, with Loren Green, Richard Hatch etc. The new Battlestar Galactica sucked in my opinion.

Star Trek TNG Season 5 Episode 25: The Inner Light is quite possibly the best episode of any Star Trek series ever.

A close second would be Star Trek TNG Season 3 Episode 4: Who Watches The Watchers.

This describes hundreds of shows throughout the ages. Even TOS would have problems today. But they were appropriate and pertinent for the time they were made and shown. And when it comes to ST, most of the time, the issue the episode is addressing (if it addressed an issue. Not every one was meant to be a commentary) is still a valid one for today.

I'm still trying to puzzle out what your specific complaint is. First of all, the show IS shown today. It's running on both streaming and cable. And of course it's "outdated" because it was made in the 80's and 90's so it looks like a special effects show made during that time. I think you are saying if it was made today, it would be a different show. Of course it would be. Riker and Picard would be lovers and Data would be a trans android, but you can enjoy the show for what it was.

Take for example there's a scene in one episode where an alien is in sickbay and asks Dr Crusher about human females and males, and they note that human females wear make-up and males don't. And they suggest that all of the burden of looking good is placed on the females.

To which, Dr Crusher responds that both men and women want to look good, but men like to give the appearance that they don't try to look good.

What??? Of course, putting aside that now-a-days both women and men wear make-up and not just for the screen if you know what I mean, women of the 1980s-1990s were pressured to look good with hair and make-up while men didn't have to do anything but be 'plain' and that was the order of things. Women were pressured to work hard to look good while the men weren't.

Take, for instance, there was a scene in another episode with a telepathic woman who becomes the perfect wife by binding with a man and becoming his ideal mate. Not only that, but she was born and raised for the singular purpose of being married to a man so that it would bring peace between two peoples.

Dr Crusher was having none of it, but Picard said that arranged marriage was common in many cultures, including our own.

What? When that last happened in our culture, they were still fighting with swords. I think it's ancient history now, except for some areas of Muslim majorities. I don't think it's okay to be in an arranged marriage. And for the people of Star Trek TNG, who are sometimes ignorant and innocent of some aspects of the past, this simply isn't an okay position to have today.

I watched three episodes of Picard and I was finished with that and discovery was terrible.

They just call this crap Star Trek for people like my dad because he'll watch it just because it's called that.

Men that wear makeup generally aren't interested in other women and that is a tiny tiny fraction of people.

If women were attracted to men who wore makeup we'd all do it they aren't women dictate what's attractive about men not men.

Yeah I don't think that would have changed in 200 years.

I watched the first season and it's all right I don't know why they reuse the same characters as I wish they would have given him a new crew versus a poor facsimile of over and a poor facsimile of Spock and a poor facsimile of all the other characters and it's because they can't think of any new ones. But still it was enjoyable

You are allowed to link the clip from Youtube. If there are copyright violations Youtube will remove them and you will simply have a broken link. I am interested in which episodes you think cannot be shown today since STNG is still aired on many channels and streaming services.
