Do you think media companies should be able to be sued for defamation when they use anonymous sources? There might be some good reasons to keep the source anonymous, a need to protect individuals from reprisal. But at the same time, do we want media companies to just be able to damage anyone's reputation and claim the information came from a person whom they cannot reveal?
As long as they state in the broadcast that the sources ARE anonymous they should be covered. From what I gather from listening extensively to the Fox and other lawsuits, in America they have to PROVE “malicious intent”. That is a far far higher bar than say UK and Australia. But even here if you say “anonymous sources” and especially if follow that with a word like “allege” or “purport” then that covers you - watch people like Ari Melber who is a lawyer- he is very careful to qualify any statements
Anything less is a license to just fabricate whatever they want and hide behind anonymous sources that may or may not even exist. The liberal media loves it.
Right wing media is not immune to it but the left wing media certainly depends on it. It was their bread and butter throughout the entire Trump presidency
Have you been following the Dominion case? I have. They have Tuckers and Ingrams emails admitting they knew that there was no evidence that the 2020 election had been stolen. Of course none of this is being aired on Faux
I don't see this situation as having an easy solution. It's going to result in bad things either way.
