McCarthy Has No Regrets About Tucker’s Access To Jan. 6 Security Footage Amid GOP Backlash

House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) told reporters Tuesday evening he does not regret giving Fox News’ Tucker Carlson exclusive access to more than 40,000 hours of Jan. 6 security footage, despite an onslaught of criticism of the Fox News segment from his GOP colleagues.

“Do you regret giving him this footage so he could whitewash the events of that day?” CNN’s Manu Raju asked McCarthy during a Tuesday night gaggle.

“No,” McCarthy responded. “I said at the very beginning: transparency. And so what I wanted to produce for everybody is exactly what I said. That people can actually look at it and see what’s gone on that day.”

House Republicans Quietly Halt Inquiry Into Trump’s Finances

WASHINGTON — House Republicans have quietly halted a congressional investigation into whether Donald J. Trump profited improperly from the presidency, declining to enforce a court-supervised settlement agreement that demanded that Mazars USA, his former accounting firm, produce his financial records to Congress.

Representative James R. Comer, Republican of Kentucky and the chairman of the Oversight and Accountability Committee, made clear he had abandoned any investigation into the former president’s financial dealings — professing ignorance about the inquiry Democrats opened when they controlled the House — and was instead focusing on whether President Biden and members of his family were involved in an influence-peddling scheme.

“I honestly didn’t even know who or what Mazars was,” said Mr. Comer, who was the senior Republican on the oversight panel during the last Congress, while Democrats waged a lengthy legal fight over obtaining documents from the firm.

Border Chief: ‘Explosive’ MTG Claims Agents Found At Border Is Just Duct Taped Sand

U.S. Border Patrol Chief Raul Ortiz set the record straight on Wednesday when he debunked Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene’s (R-GA) recent claims that agents found an “explosive” near the southern border in January.

The bizarre allegation first surfaced during a Homeland Security Committee hearing Wednesday that House Republicans performatively planned to take place near the U.S.-Mexico border in Texas. All of the Democrats on the panel opted to boycott the hearing, arguing that Republicans were using the field hearing to “score political points.”

“Unfortunately, it has become clear that Republicans planned to politicize this event from the start, breaking with the committee’s proud history of bipartisanship,” Rep. Bennie Thompson (D-MS) told the Washington Examiner this week. “Instead of a fact-finding mission to develop better border security and immigration policies, Republicans are traveling to the border to attack the administration and try to score political points with their extreme rhetoric – despite having voted against the resources border personnel need.”

If all the criminal investigations into former President Donald Trump end in conviction, then Trump will be a true renaissance man of crime.

Vox reports, "The FBI searched Mar-a-Lago, Trump’s Florida residence because, as federal prosecutors said in a fiery court filing in August, they believed not only did the former president possess “dozens” of boxes “likely to contain classified information” but also that “efforts were likely taken to obstruct the government’s investigation.” In that search, the FBI said it did remove over 100 classified documents, some of which reportedly contained information about nuclear weapons. That’s all part of just one investigation into possible violations of the Espionage Act, the improper handling of federal records, and obstruction of a federal investigation.

"Meanwhile, a second federal investigation is looking into the January 6 attack on the Capitol and broader efforts to overturn the 2020 election, an issue that obviously could implicate Trump into possible insurrection, treason, and obstruction. Trump's own words on that day indict him.

"In Georgia, a number of Trump allies were subpoenaed as part of a state criminal investigation into interference with the 2020 election in their state specifically. Trump told the state’s top election official that he wants “to find 11,780 votes.'"

"Then there are two separate New York investigations into the Trump Organization and Trump’s web of surrounding businesses, which are investigating allegations that Trump misrepresented his companies’ finances in order to obtain bank loans or to reduce taxes."

Of secondary importance is Trump's payoff to a porn star, Stormy Daniels, and the illegal use of campaign funds.

    But something is wrong here.

Trump's theft of classified documents occurred over two years ago, and the DOJ has been investigating the matter for over a year and has piles of evidence.

Trump's call to far-right extremist groups to occupy our capitol and overthrow the elected government occurred over two years ago, and the DOJ has been investigating the matter for over a year and has piles of evidence. A diligent House committee spent a year investigating the Jan. 6 insurrection.

Trump's attempt's to change the vote in Georgia was over two years ago.

Trump has been committing tax fraud for years, and the CFO of the Trump Organization has been sentenced to prison.

Trump's tryst with Daniels occurred over seven years ago.

Some prosecutors and experts say Trump will be indicted "soon." They have been saying that for months.

    All this begs a question.

Will the Republican candidate for the Presidency ever be indicted for anything?

House GOP chairmen ask Manhattan DA Alvin Bragg to testify on Trump probe

WASHINGTON — Three House Republican committee chairmen sent Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg a letter Monday requesting he testify before Congress "about what plainly appears to be a politically motivated prosecutorial decision" in any potential indictment of former President Donald Trump in the prosecutor's hush money probe.

"You are reportedly about to engage in an unprecedented abuse of prosecutorial authority: the indictment of a former president of the United States and current declared candidate for that office," the letter said.

It comes ahead of a pending New York grand jury decision in the case.

House GOP passes parents’ rights bill in clash over schools

WASHINGTON (AP) — House Republicans on Friday narrowly passed legislation that would fulfill a campaign promise to give parents a role in what’s taught in public schools. It has little chance in the Democrat-run Senate and critics said it would propel a far-right movement that has led to book bans, restrictions aimed at transgender students and raucous school board meetings across the country.

Speaker Kevin McCarthy, R-Calif. who made the Parents’ Bill of Rights Act a priority during the early weeks of his tenure, said Republicans were “keeping our promise, our commitment to America, that parents will have a say in their kids’ education.” The bill passed 213-208, with five Republicans — mostly members of the House Freedom Caucus — voting against it.

It would require schools to publish course studies and a list of books kept in libraries, as well as affirm parents’ ability to meet with educators, speak at school board meetings and examine school budgets.

Jordan Tries Again To Dunk On Manhattan DA

House Judiciary Committee Chair Rep. Jim Jordan (R-OH) has doubled down on his intent to investigate Manhattan DA Alvin Bragg as he seeks to block the prosecutor from potentially bringing a case against Donald Trump.

It’s led to a bizarre back-and-forth between Bragg and Jordan over the past week, as the grand jury hearing the Stormy Daniels hush-money case listens to what are reportedly its final witnesses before prosecutors make their final presentation to the grand jury.

Jordan, along with House Oversight Committee Chair Rep. James Comer (R-TN) and House Administration Committee Chair Rep. Bryan Steil (R-WI), demanded last week that Bragg appear before the House to answer questions about his probe into Trump.

In that letter, the trio called the investigation an “unprecedented abuse of prosecutorial authority.”

Bragg to House GOP: Mind Your Business

Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg sent several top House GOPers a letter on Friday morning with one message: mind the business that pays you.

The response comes almost two weeks after House Judiciary Committee Chair Jim Jordan (R-OH) demanded Bragg testify about any political motivations that might underpin his investigation, and provide any communications between his office and the Justice Department — all lines pulled from Donald Trump’s conspiracy theory playbook that he’s been publishing on Truth Social. New reporting also indicates that Trump and his lawyers have been in direct contact with the House Republicans behind the Trump grievance-based investigations, including Jim Jordan. When Bragg rebuffed Jordan’s letter, the Ohio Republican sent another letter alongside House Oversight Committee Chair Rep. James Comer (R-TN) and House Administration Committee Chair Rep. Bryan Steil (R-WI) calling the investigation an “unprecedented abuse of prosecutorial authority.” Today, Bragg issued a lengthy response to their inquiries.

“We did not engage in a point-by-point rebuttal of your letter because our Office is legally constrained in how it publicly discusses pending criminal proceedings, as prosecutorial offices are across the country and as you well know,” the district attorney wrote. “That secrecy is critical to protecting the privacy of the target of any criminal investigation as well as the integrity of the independent grand jury’s proceedings.”

Inside the backchannel communications keeping Donald Trump in the loop on Republican investigations

Donald Trump continues to wield enormous power on Capitol Hill as House Republicans seek to curry favor with the former president, pursuing his fixations through their investigations and routinely updating him and his closest advisers on their progress.

A number of top House GOP lawmakers have disclosed in recent days their efforts to keep the former president informed on the pace and substance of their investigations. Lines of communication appear to go both ways. Not only are Trump, his aides and close allies regularly apprised of Republicans’ committee work, they also at times exert influence over it, multiple people familiar with the talks tell CNN.

The constant, and sometimes direct, communication between Trump and the committees has emerged as a crucial method for Trump to shape Republicans’ priorities in their newly-won House majority. It also underscores the extraordinary sway an ex-president still holds over his party’s lawmakers and the deference many still afford him.

The next two years will be pretty good. Doomsayers are always thinking their time is the worst ever. And Trump is a distraction and drama to catch you up in. He isn't actually all that relevant anymore outside the TV "news" bubble.

‘Unlawful political interference’: Bragg defends Trump indictment against GOP attacks

Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg defended his office’s decision to indict Donald Trump in a letter to Republican lawmakers Friday, rejecting GOP accusations of political persecution as “baseless and inflammatory.”

“That conclusion is misleading and meritless,” wrote Leslie Dubeck, Bragg’s general counsel, in a six-page letter to three House Republican committee chairs who have sought internal details of the criminal probe.

House GOP’s Biden investigations sputter out of the gate

House Republicans charged into the majority vowing an investigative onslaught against President Joe Biden and Democrats. But they’ve gotten almost nowhere so far — and some in the party are getting frustrated.

According to interviews with more than a dozen House Republicans, a sizable chunk of the conference is focused on preventing a banking crisis and a looming debt fight instead of on Biden family oversight or a politicized government panel. At the same time, the party base is chafing at the lack of big bombshells and concrete steps against administration officials to back up all of lawmakers’ talk.

“All of us hear from constituents that they’re very anxious for results. And our task, part of our task, is explaining to people what this process is about, and what to expect,” Rep. Mike Johnson (R-La.), a member of House GOP leadership, said in a brief interview. “I think some people get anxious because they just want immediate results.”

It went downhill yes, and it already was going downhill. Trump was (yes, was;he is now irrelevant), a symptom not the cause. And it didn't go downhill nearly as much as people predicted. The country was, is, and will continue to be in a slow decline.

Manhattan DA sues Rep. Jim Jordan to block GOP inquiry into Trump case

WASHINGTON — Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg filed a lawsuit Tuesday against Republican House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jim Jordan, asking a court to block elements of the congressional inquiry into his case against former President Donald Trump.

Calling it an “unprecedently brazen and unconstitutional attack” of an ongoing investigation, Bragg said in the suit that allowing Jordan's demands, including subpoenaing former Assistant DA Mark Pomerantz, would cause “imminent irreparable harm if the secret and privileged material is compelled to be disclosed.”

Appeals court temporarily blocks House subpoena for ex-Manhattan prosecutor in Trump indictment

A federal appeals court on Thursday temporarily blocked a subpoena issued by the House Judiciary Committee for testimony from a former Manhattan prosecutor who was involved in a criminal investigation of ex-President Donald Trump.

The order by the 2nd Circuit Court of Appeals in New York came just hours before the former prosecutor, Mark Pomerantz, had been directed by a federal judge to sit for a deposition with the committee.

Former Trump probe prosecutor refuses to answer House Judiciary Committee questions

A former prosecutor refused Friday to answer questions at a deposition by the House Judiciary Committee about a criminal investigation of Donald Trump in which he once played a leading role.

The Judiciary Committee, whose chairman Rep. Jim Jordan of Ohio is a close Republican ally of Trump, has been investigating whether the Manhattan District Attorney’s Office probe and charging of Trump was politically motivated.

The former prosecutor Mark Pomerantz, in an opening statement prepared for his deposition and obtained by NBC News, called the Judiciary Committee’s demand for his testimony “an act of political theater.”

“Fortunately, I do not have to cooperate with the cynical histrionics that this deposition represents,” said Pomerantz.
