The Paradox of Tolerance

Most will recognize the saying "the only thing we should never tolerate is intolerance". Popper stated it in the above way.

This does not mean that we should repress intolerance when it manifests as an intellectual argument. Popper argues that we should allow it so long as it can be kept and check, and it can be countered with other intellectual arguments. Which means intolerant beliefs can be attacked, rebutted... even ridiculed. But not repressed.

But when legislation is enacted in the name of intolerance, that rules out intellectual debate.

Bills like DeSantis' "Don't Say Gay" and his book-banning, or the elimination of ONE (of hundreds) of special district in Florida to punish a business for their directors using their right to free speech, make all intellectual debate impossible. Or boycotting a beer because they feature a gay spokesperson. Or smashing the sign of a rainbow in a display in Target because... I don't even know why those terrorists did that. But those are just some examples of what I'm referring to

THAT should never be tolerated. Because they are meant to harm ... somebody. Be it gay people, or a business, or people who are simply trying to make others feel comfortable with who they are.... That's very different from the purely intellectual fight of ideas.​

 

The problem is, the Left demands acceptance, not tolerance.

Giving children access to porn is illegal. We don't need a fascist governor to gratuitously accuse educators, who are just trying to do the job of educating children as best they can, of being pedophiles only because that draws applause from the MAGA-stupid crowd that attend his speeches (of which, to comply with forum rules I must assume, there are none in this forum)

In any case, the topic is intolerance. And that is exemplified in ACTIONS... not thought. Actions intended to hurt somebody like boycotting a beer for featuring a gay spokesperson, or bringing down signs in private stores....

 

If they act like pedophiles, then they can't complain when they get called pedophiles.

There is no "Don't say gay" bill. That is a lie perpetrated by leftists and left wing media. No books are banned. Anyone can get any book that is not allowed in elementary schools. Learn what "ban" means. That "special district" that Disney had has been being targeted LONG before DeSantis came along. DeSantis just got the job done is all. No beer was boycotted for featuring a gay person. I have no idea what you are talking about with the rainbow display in Target, however I'd imagine that was piddly compared to the billions of dollars leftists have cost States in their riots, yet you never complain about those. And if all it takes is to destroy one sign for you to call someone a terrorist then you have no business discussing...well...anything because it shows your POV is so skewed as to be completely and utterly worthless. :shrug:

Violence justifies use of force to stop the violence. What these " Hate speech is violence" people want is to use physical force to stop speech.
