Yes it is. It is a variant of SARS.

Correct. So are common colds and various other respiratory illnesses.

Yes, that would be for common flus. This particular one is caused by a coronavirus.

And I stand by my forecast.

    Fauci's mentioned 200,000 deaths.

British mathematicians predict 500,000 casualties in the UK alone.

Some epidemiologists are cautious, others are alarmist.

The average is about 525,000 American deaths.

But I understand that science is not the strength of Trumpsters.

They don't care. And think it will clear out the EATERS. The wastrils. The elderly layabouts. Maybe if they are lucky, the homeless.

The death rate is not 4.5%. For what must be the 100th time, we have no reliable death rate because we have no reliable infection rate. What we know is the number of dead, and that the number of infected is much higher than we have confirmed thru test. Thus the death rate is lower than 4.5% obtained by using the known infection numbers.

You think there are only 780,000 cases?
If so your death rate is correct

For every single case above that, for every unknown one the death rate goes down.

Now as testing is still hard to obtain, what do you think the chances are that the infected rate is correct? 75% correct? 50% correct?

I would wager the infected rate might be in the 20% correct range.

What % do you think it is?

It's currently the KNOWN death rate. It's literally all we have to go on. There are idiots claiming this is no big deal/nothing worse than an average flu. They are idiots. Anyone attempting to downplay the threat is an idiot. We'll see what happens when we hit 4/15; the projected max death date for USA.

I really hope like hell that all of you naysayers are right. I will gladly listen to your "TOLD YA SO!" spews if this turns out to be a nothing burger. I don't think it is. We're just getting started in the US.

I'm not yelling out "bloodshed". I think there's a chance for some small-scale violence that won't mean anything in the long-run, but will generate headlines. I'm pretty sure the OP was talking about people dying from Covid when he used "bloodshed", since that's entirely what the OP is about: people getting sick.

Again, if it looks like you're not overreacting, you're losing. But like I always say: when have conservatives been right about this? Every prediction they've made has been laughably wrong.

Each day I wake up I hope to find out they were right. When it's worse than it was yesterday, I find no joy or laughter in knowing they are still wrong. It's sad. My preference is that this thing dies out and they get to play "told you so," for as long as their lil' hearts desire. Truly. Nothing to laugh about.

    SARS/MERS/COVID-19 are caused by coronaviruses.

All types of flu (common or otherwise) are caused by (and only caused by) orthomyxoviruses.

Therefore COVID-19 is not "quite literally" the flu.

That's not a question for a poster here.

Experts in statistics and medicine can work out the death rate.

What IS a question for posters is:

What death rate would you accept as being just fine?

Those trying to incite panic are part of the problem. Those working in grocery stores, restaurants, and delivering goods are not losing.

I say just apply a little common sense to the situation in place of the unknown. If the infection rate is just 25% greater than known then the death rate follows suit and drops equally. As we have heard for weeks that there are not enough test in the country it is beyond reasonable to think the infection rate is 25% higher, if not more. I would say it's at least 50% under confirmed and most likely more than that.

Add in the fact that the majority will only have minor symptoms and that makes it even more likely that many will have it, get over it and never know they had it. Hell half of us on here might have had or still have it now. And all out dumb butts are still posting so I'm guessing we are still alive. :)

Regardless saying 4.5% of the people who contract it will die is misleading as hell IMO.

I agree we all hope we are right thinking we will see a death rate under 1% when all is said and done. I understand the desire of many to drive home the "fear" to get people to take this seriously, but adding in Trump bashing while doing that is a asshat move IMO. It honestly makes it look like political based BS and thus lessens the impact of the message as a warning.

When did I do that? This thing scares the hell out of me. It's got nothing to do with any politician in the history of the planet.

Sorry was not pointing that at you, just in general. Seen a lot of that.
Apologies, I should have been more clear :)

I'm 51 and work 70 hours a week right now is a highly trafficked area, i.e. germ fest !

I'm not nervous a bit about the virus. That I get, push thru it most likely. If not then oh well I won't know about that anyways.

The economic aftermath worries the hell out of me for this country and the world. I'm far from a globalist but I think we will see epic suffering because of the shutdown across the world.

    That is just pure ignorance.

We are calling in military doctors and nurses, sending out multiple hospital ships, running out of PPE, having auto manufacturers switching to building ventilators, calling up doctors who have retired (and are thus in the high risk category) when things are "just fine".

Retired doctors have volunteered and lost their lives.

And, on top of that medical experts are saying this is going to get significantly worse.

There is NO measure by which this is "just fine".

When YOU think it will all be better is totally irrelevant.

Capitalism can NOT exceed the speed of government intervention in an emergency.

There is absolutly NO possibility of that.

For just one example, that's why we have FEMA.

And, capitalism is based on maximizing profit.

Why would you choose now to insult capitalism by calling it driven by greed?

Stating that we need to be far more aggressive is NOT "yelling out bloodshed".

It's pointing to what experts have long been saying about our pathetically slow response to this pandemic.

What possible good could come from NOT pushing for an adequate response?

Bull. There are people waiting in pain for hip replacements. There are cases of delayed cancer treatment. Etc., etc.

The very definition of overrun is that they can't provide the service they were designed to provide.

And, that's before ever considering that healthcare workers are losing their LIVES in this fight - in no small part because PPE and other equipment and supplies have run out.

Some places have run out of morgue space and have rented refridgerator trucks to hold the bodies.

Tellig these healthcare workers that things are "just fine" is just about as disgusting as one could imagine.

You need to get back in touch with reality.

You almost would have made me cry if you weren't a fan of a president who brags that his pandemic briefings attract more listeners than the Bachelor's.

I doubt that there is anything to do with you if you do not make the connection between the seriousness of this disaster and the decisions that were taken by the President as soon as the world became aware of it.
