Hunting large game animals, many of whom are going extinct, is an abomination, imo. My sons hunt elk with bows. I absolutely hate it.
I won't eat veal. Keeping baby animals in a cage so they will be 'tastier' is disgusting and incredibly cruel.

That is not true. While many white men hunt, many for the sport of it unfortunately, it is the Chinese who pay Africans to kill elephants and rhinos. They need the ivory for their ancient Chinese medicine, just like they need shark fins for their shark fin soup; and bones from tigers that they starve to death.

What the hell is this guy thinking? How does he get a thrill out of killing a helpless animal? Safaries to kill should be outlawed.

You should google ancient Chinese medicine. They use a variety of animal parts to make their 'medicine'. China is actually responsible for most of the poaching in Africa. They don't hunt them themselves. They pay others to do their killing for them. If there is any culture on the planet that can be called out for animal cruelty it is China.

Good one. I was just thinking about 'popular' this thread is--twenty five pages and counting. Many of the people who are outraged over this (as I am too) are proabortion. Killing a baby elephant is disgusting, but killing a baby is a 'choice'.

You talk like your ideology is scientific fact. That is your opinion, and only an opinion.

Human: “of or belonging to a man, human, humane”), from homo (“man, human”)
    https://www.etymonline.com/word/Human

being (n.) c. 1300, "existence," in its most comprehensive sense, "condition, state, circumstances; presence, fact of existing," early 14c., existence," from be + -ing.Sense of "that which physically exists, a person or thing" (as in human being) is from late 14c.

    https://www.etymonline.com/word/being
According to the origin of the words "human" and "being" a fetus is a human being.

What does this have to do with the question of mine you quoted?

    Elk are far from extinct.

Elephants in areas that have controlled hunting are actually growing in population, while elephants in areas that ban legal hunting are dying off. Legal hunters keep poachers away, and don't kill nearly as many.

Then don't eat veal, just don't try to stop me from eating veal, should I want some (I actually don't eat veal, but it's primarily due to cost, not silly animal rights ideas).

So you want elephants to go extinct then. Areas that have legal hunting for elephants have growing elephant populations. Legal hunters keep poachers out, and legal hunters don't slaughter indiscriminately like poachers.

The point is that poaching for Chinese medicine kills a lot more animals than does legal trophy hunting, and it provides much less money for the African country economies. An elephant is worth more as a trophy than as parts.

We agree on this. I still don’t know how the post of mine that was quoted is relevant to this part of the discussion.

    Here it is again.

How do legal hunters keep poachers out? They don't. My point is that there must be something wrong with a person who gets a thrill from murdering a helpless animal. What about the guy who likes to put a wild cat into a long cage and shoot at it as it freaks out.

And a baby elephant? And trump's obnoxious son walking with a baby elephant's tail around his neck?

Earlier in this thread I provided a link showing that the poachers pay the hunt guides to turn a blind eye to their poaching

Which is not the same thing as legitimate hunting.

What do chicken and eggs have to do with eating veal or hunting elephants. You aren't comparing eating eggs
Silly animal rights? Some of them are silly; but protecting animals like elephants from poachers who cut their faces off to get the ivory isn't an animal "right"; its just humane. Since when did being a conservative mean you can't have feelings for these animals, be concerned for the health of the ocean, not want to see our national parks exploited by big business for their timber and fossil fuels, worry about our aquifiers are running dry, air and water quality, animals going extinct ?

I would never try to stop you from eating whatever you want; but it is my prerogative to find many hunting practices disgusting. If you want to eat your Chinese food with chop sticks made from ivory cut off a poached elephant go ahead.

What does legal and legitimate hunting have to do with poaching? How is it the two are apparently indistinguishable from one another according to yourself?

Great. But often the power of primitive weapons doesn't yield a clean kill, and the animal suffers a long, drawn out death of many days while it is still mobile and evades its tracker, and then it gets painfully eaten alive by the fangs other animals when it falls.

Maybe that's actually quite okay, the way of Nature and the Universe is intense suffering and then death.

Suffering and Death, Suffering and Death, Suffering and Death.

I’m simply trying to get people to think rationally. Say I had to choose the life of a food animal. Elk would be great, being a veal calf would fit my personality a lot better than having to be a laying hen or a broiler.

Someday visit a chicken farm and processing facility and then go hunting with your boys. See which makes more sense to you then. At least try both out on YouTube.

I would never trophy hunt, but I have no problem with those that do. No more than the person munching chicken nuggets.

LOL. That's funny--go hunting with your boys. Even when I still spry they wouldn't have taken me hunting with them.
I don't eat meat much, and I've never crunched on a chicken nugget. I do like a good Big Mac occasionally though.
I've seen pictures of chicken and pig farms, and cattle slaughtering places. I wish it didn't have to be so brutal; but we must feed the masses so their fat asses don't starve to death.

That’s too bad about the hunting. Had a neighbor with ALS that was in a wheelchair the last couple years of his life and his nephews took him hunting.

Ha ha. In my selfish interest, stick with the Big Mac. I raise them for a living! :) Buy two!

Yep it’s all pretty brutal. If we live others must die. Even the organic gardener steps on and kills a toad picking cherry tomatoes from time to time.

I think it’s important to keep it all in perspective and not criticize others for their choices when ours may result in the same suffering or worse for animals. Of course there are lines we don’t cross, but they have to be drawn with reason not simply emotion.

Sounds like we agree on that. Feed the fat asses...that’s classic. :)Thanks for the discussion.

Doesn't change a thing about white middle age men killing big wild life.
