    https://www.foxnews.com/opinion/trump-negotiating-new-panama-canal-treaty-american-people

In 1977, Prez Carter gave the canal to Panama because he was intimidated by Gen. Omar Torrijos, the military leader of Panama who took power in a coup d’état. He was also an ally of Manuel Noriega’s. The subtext of why is beyond my reach.
We Americans are horribly short sighted and only look ahead to retiring and buying an RV or a boat.
We need to look out for the next generation besides ourselves.
As stated by some members of China's politburo, as time marches on there is a good chance South America will be a Chinese colony. Why? They are generally corrupt and China thrives in corruption. They see other races as inferior to Chinese, and the see any Chinese anywhere as under their authority.
Not a good mix or American democracy.

He’s not fouling the Oval Office yet; this is illegal. And if the “deal” with the Taliban is an example of his ability to negotiate, perhaps a hands off approach is appropriate.

We have a Treaty with Panama and Trump is working on a better one. Presidents have long exercised the power to withdraw from and negotiate Treaties.

Where is Manuel Noriega these days, anyway?

What's there to negotiate? We've been out of it for a few decades.

    ...xxx
the Panamanian government took control in 1999. It is now managed and operated by the Panamanian government-owned Panama Canal Authority.

The original locks are 33.5 meters (110 ft) wide and allow the passage of Panamax ships. A third, wider lane of locks was constructed between September 2007 and May 2016. The expanded waterway began commercial operation on 26 June 2016. The new locks allow transit of larger, Neopanamax ships.

Cool story, but the negotiation to return the canal to Panama was initiated and conducted by Nixon and Ford, although it's true it wasn't completed until Carter was in office. It's a treaty, so it required 2/3s of vote in Senate, which it got.

To think Trump is threating Panama "for American people" is horribly naive. It's no coincidence he is doing that now that he is in hot water in Panama for financial crimes. What Trump does is always for him, and no one else.

Your FOX opinion piece got everything wrong.

Negotiations requires someone to negotiate with. Panama made 3.5 billion dollars last year; projections for this year are over 4 billion. Panama isn't interested in negotiations.

Negotiations require leverage, something to swap. What can the US offer Panama for control of the canal?

We are going to challenge Chinese strategic occupancy of a critical waterway.

Yea....well....the Chinese to not occupy or control the canal, so there is that. Why defend the moronic statements made by Trump when he'll most likely have to take them back anyway? Besides, as per the current treaty, the US reserves the right to keep the canal open using military force if need be.

It's what the treaty from the 1970s says, and so far no one has challenged the US over it. We did, in the other hand, invade Panama with military force in 1989.

The President elect has stated, " "Merry Christmas to all, including to the wonderful soldiers of China, who are lovingly, but illegally, operating the Panama Canal." The president of Panama has stated that there are no Chinese troops in Panama. There has been no proof that they are there. I think the claim may not be true so does Newsweek.

Trump can withdraw from the treaty turning control of the treaty from the US to Panama.

I'm sure that will not be necessary, but of course President Trump has leverage.

Who cares what Newsweek or Panama says. America built that canal and is utterly dependent on it. It is time to use American power for the benefit of the American people. This is a no brainer. Carter the bitch should never have given it away.

    What treaty would that be?

Not that you will be able to give an answer.

How did the process go that created a new treaty?

Does anyone even know what, if any, treaty is in place?

    That's what I thought.
But everyone responding was acting like there was still one in place. I thought I was missing something.

So, there's nothing for trump to negotiate and this thread is pointless?

This is the time to use hard power. Go to Panama and tell them to get the Chinese out or else. Tell them to cede control back to America or else. This is an issue of national security. The Chinese don't have ANY business controlling nearly 50% of OUR trade. This is an existential question for America and this is an issue worth fighting a war over.

Or else? What is else? Threat of military force?

China actually invests money in Panama, for example in port construction. Why doesn't the US do the same thing? It's a free market, no?
