A treaty is not a settlement. It's an agreement. Both sides have terms. Both sides need to uphold their part of the agreement.

When one side fails to do so, there needs to be repercussions.

It's really pathetic the number of people that allow other countries to stomp all over us and take advantage of us... because they want to be pacifists and friends, viewing the world as some weird high school popularity contest. It's the prototypical "everbody dancing in a field of flowers in a circle, holding hands, singing kum-by-yah. Its a massively naive ideology to hold.

And if the Panamanian authorities respond by increasing charges what then?

What exactly would the American repercussion towards Panama be?

I'm not trying to 'pin a rose' on Trump over this Panama Canal thing... take it easy. Moreover, I don't know what any of this situation has to do with oil in Texas, or Mexico wanting a "cut" because Texas was part of Mexico until 1836 (and later became part of the United States in 1845).

As I said (or thought I did), Trump's kind of bullying bluster is just one visible aspect of his "art of the deal". I don't know if he'll be effective in getting fees for U. S.-flagged vessels lowered when using the Panama Canal or not, but he's not going to invade Panama and seize the canal at gunpoint. Again -- to Trump -- this is "just business", and it might just work....

Hoo boy! Hypotheticals much.... What will the Panamanians do? What would Trump do if the Panamanians do whatever...? How the hell would I know? How about you -- what do you think the Panamanians would do, and then what Trump would do if the Panamanians did whatever they might do if Trump did what he said he would do, if he meant it? Quite a rabbit hole we've got going here! :spin:

I am confident everyone else can see the similarities. Trump wants the canal back because it for formerly US territory, and Mexico could make similar statements about Texas natural resources. Of course Mexico is not making such stupid statements.

Oh, I see. Making territorial demands is just "bluster" and just "Trump being Trump". That's how his loyalists brush his idiocy under the rug.

The Panamanians are likely to say the price is the price, if you don't want to pay you can't come through.
If Trump doesn't like it, too bad.

Brush it under the rug or throw it in the street. Honestly, it's no skin off my ass. Go quarrel with someone who wants to "die on that hill"....
