With regard to climate change, do people think:

  1. We should obscure sunlight if possible

For a significant cost every ~ 30 years.

    Nuclear will.

So does the byproducts that are radio active.

But I do wish we could find a way to deal with those byproducts.
I though nuclear is a good option.

    Maybe fusion?

There are multiple ways to safely dispose of nuclear waste. All it takes is political will.

I think the issue with the waste is, not in my backyard.

Underground salt mines and the deep ocean are not in anyone's back yards.

Nuclear wastes are a disaster-waiting-to-happen. There is not one active repository in the world that stores High Level radioactive wastes. In the US they are stored at the power plants, which are mostly near highly populated areas on the East coast and Southeast. It gets much worse, but I’ll stop there.

In the seven decades of storage there has been no disaster. Please take the time to inform yourself as any engineer would do. I have provided references.

How do you know? These products cause cancer. At one time, radioactive waste was buried at sea. How do you know they haven’t been ingested and caused deaths.

Also, these wastes must be stored for hundreds of thousands of years. And you’re bragging about 70 years. What if there’s an Earthquake with the epicenter at a waste storage site? What’s the backup plan?

How long before those places get filled?
The 1/2 life of the radioactive material is what, 100s of years? I am asking because I don't remember.

It will take a long time to fill the oceans. Half life is irrelevant if the material is disposed of correctly.

The world produces ~ 6000 tons of spent fuel rods per year. This is equivalent to a volume of a cube approximately 40 meters on each side. But some of this spent fuel can be reprocessed.

It is important, because nothing last forever and there will be exposure from leaks at some point in time.

I am all for nuclear energy, I think that is likely the future of energy.

AI power requirements will demand natural gas (short term) and then nuclear (indefinite term). Nothing else (except coal) can do the job.

There is no exposure buried deep in the earth or oceans.

Want to live next door to one? If they build one next door, do you want to watch your home reduce to half its value?

Oddly enough, I just ran across this story.

So it seems, Congress does recognize the need for additional clean power.

    ...
The United States is speeding up efforts to license and build a new generation of nuclear reactors to supply carbon-free electricity.

Faster development is one thing Congress and the administration agree on. President Joe Biden signed legislation in July to modernize the licensing of new reactor technologies so they can be built faster. Republican and Democratic leaders of the Senate environment and House energy committees praised the enactment.

"U. of Chi. Professor and "Scientist" Wants to Block Sunlight to Cool Earth"

let the scientists do whatever they want, they tell us man CAN'T affect the climate, so what harm could it do?

only people that think man CAN affect the climate should be concerned

    Not detailed in this article.

    ...
“They must also show they can safely shut down, and then keep their fuel properly cooled, under normal conditions and in case of severe weather, earthquakes, problems with plant systems and other extreme events. Current reactors use pumps and backup power systems to stay safe; new designs can rely on natural processes such as gravity and convection to remain safe,” he said.

How will the core be cooled when the cooling system is ripped apart by an earthquake. Do want to live next door to one?

It has been known for more than 50 years to greatly reduce waste by determined reprocessing of spent rods and other units to extract the material for another round of "burning" the fuel in the reactor, but politics got in the way thus we are wasting a lot of fuel and makes storage much more radioactive and bulkier than it should be then it was the democrats who shut down the nation repository base because they are imbeciles who has consistently opposed Nuclear power.

Dixie Lee Ray talked about it when she was head of the Atomic Energy Commision.

Yucca Mt site was chosen as the main repository site LINK

Reprocessing actually creates more radioactive isotopes than when it was started. It’s an ineffective process - nothing but a FALSE propaganda point for the most costly power in the world.

Yucca Mountain has never opened. Not one ounce of the 92 Billion tons of waste has ever been stored there.

After almost 10 years, all three cores of the debilitated Fukushima reactors have still not been dismantled. Work has not even started on this task. Make no mistake, radioactive cooling water is being discharged into the Pacific on a regular basis. It adds up, and cancer deaths worldwide will continue to rise. It’s what is NOT said that we need to worry about.
