I wonder if this was just someone disgruntled with their medical care. Or possibly an ideological attack on big corporations. Condolences to his family:

It was definitely a well planned hit. The shooter probably has intel about Thompson's schedule.

As per usual, I will not be speculating about the killer's motives. Regardless of the motives, this was completely unjustified and the victim and the victim's family deserve our sympathy.

I hope the police can identify and capture the suspect. It would be interesting to know if he acted alone because of some grievance or if it was something else, like he was hired by someone else.

I'm betting he pissed off the wrong people. Someone wanted him out of the way.

The shooter is a pro. He thought this through and has done a good job of making the hit public and covering his tracks, too

Whoever hired the guy wanted to off Thompson and let everyone know he was clipped.

    First question:
“Who gains” from him being murdered?
    And most importantly:
“Does the shooter know he was breaking the law possessing a gun on NYC?”

I have an open mind until we know. I think either scenario - a lone shooter with a grievance or a hired hit - is possible. It has the look of a professional hit, but hopefully the suspect is captured and we find out which one it was.

I'd be willing to bet the shooter was someone that got screwed over by the insurance company. But it could also be personal and unrelated to the guy's job.

Sounds like someone was denied coverage and they're getting their revenge - perhaps for a (now deceased) family member

Yikes! I hope we can know the motive, too. While random attacks are random, and there’s no way to know if this is one, there is genuine reason for people to be disgruntled with their insurance company.

I am in no way condoning this; just able to see how that could be the motivation.

are you kidding? You think this guy cares about gun laws when he just offed someone? Or were you just trying to make a political statement?

Bro, you can't be not speculating about the killer's motives and categorically claim it was unjustified.

For all you know, the CEO had been blackmailing this killer for decades and had raped his child once. That is, if you're not speculating.
If you're speculating, just say you're speculating that it was unjustified.

Eh, or Thompson kept a regular set of hours and wasn't precisely difficult to track down as most people are not.

You could know where he was staying and just stake out the hotel in the morning if you know he always hits the office by 7:00 its pretty obvious the range of time you need to be waiting at the exit.

Just because the guy has currently not been caught doesn't make this a professional hit.

I would say the bicycle getaway vehicle is kind of not conducive to the professional hit theory

Either that, or ex employee. UHC has 440 000 employees, so there has to be some nutcases in the mix. They dont do just insurance, but they also compete with CVS for Claim Adjudication (PBM) services

He was not staying at the hotel where he was shot. He was going there to attend an event / meeting.

I’m not sure about that. It’s easy to caught in a traffic jam driving a car in NYC. With a bicycle you can bob and wave in traffic and look like a currier. This guy was dressed like one. A bicycle can also be far more nondescript.

I dunno. That might be the best type of getaway in midtown Manhattan.

A professional hitman’s primary tool is to blend in and be invisible. A bicycle was perfect.

There’s no such thing as a quick getaway in a car in NYC.

Refreshing that nobody has accused either commie libruls or rightwing lunatics for this murder.

The killer was motivated by something personal. He studied his target, planned his hit and knew how to get away. Doubtful that he left signs of his identity behind. He probably ditched his hat and jacket in the water somewhere in Central Park.
