Amelia. It's a gift from Joni Mitchell to all of us.

I never had heard of them but one day on one of the satellite stations they played it. My 25 year old son who goes to a fair number of festivals in the Midwest, hadn't heard of them either. Interesting stuff

Stylistically, somewhat reminiscent of the group, "Cake."

I wouldn't guess you to be a fan of Black Sabbath, nor am I, but this is a notably good cover, I think, of their song, "War Pigs."

    I had Black Sabbath's "Paranoid" on 8-track.

So what. I had all the Doors that were ever recorded in 8 track format in my earlier days.

8-track tapes were the way to go, I think, for sound quality. A shame they disappeared from the music scene.

But you give no opinion, either on the "War Pigs" cover, or on the "Cake" songs, generally.

When it comes to actual spoken word, songs offering advice, this one still sets the standard:

To tie up the group of posts, begun with your black midi, "new phave," I should mention a group I think may have preceded Cake, called The Fall-- not to be confused with the renowned, English post-punk band, of the same name (formed in the 1970s); even though this band has a punky sound, too. This song doesn't say too much, but I always liked the energy of it. I suggest that everyone give it a minute, for the vibe to get a good grip on you.

That turned out to be an excellent investment.

I want to post a correction, for my thinking that the song I just posted, a short time ago, "Big New Prinz," by The Fall, was by a different group with that same name, that had been around since the 70s. It turns out, even though the members were clearly too young to have been in that band from the start-- and I had badly mistaken the age of the front man-- it is, in fact, the very same group. It seems that the singer & founding member, Mark E. Smith, has been that band's one constant.

I had only heard that one song I'd posted, on a college radio station, in the 90s. I'll have to go ahead now, and check out more of their/his stuff.

@pitbull and @Talon , since this seems to be an area of your interest, I'll send you an alert, in case you'd like to listen and/or opine.

These are all from a 1979 Album called, "Live From the Witch Trials."

Wonderful stuff, thanx, bro, I'd call it a kind of "jazz Punk".
It remembers me of "The Tranzmitterz":

Some 30 yrs ago I was amazed by this band from New York. They also started up as a Punk combo but soon turned into HipHoppers.

Catchy tune no question. It's just that my old ears don't like being shouted at.

The Tranzmitterz tune you linked was OK, but surprisingly reserved, and low energy. This Beastie Boys track is much more dynamic, though I would have called this sound "alternative Funk," rather than Punk. But their tunes with which I'm familiar do have an undeniably Punky character, even if they're Rapping, like in this popular favorite:

    Just for comparison:

I'm glad you liked it. Punk has, honestly, never been a particular interest of mine, probably because I think the focus is more on the lyrics, and on the attitude, than on the music, which I imagine to be more bare bones, and repetitive. That said, some of this stuff by The Fall is growing on me. It's just a matter of being in the right mood for it.

I'm including a few more songs from the "Witch Trials" album, plus a couple from another album from that same year (1979), "Dragnet." These were their first two albums.
