I have some references where the silver cup is used at the last supper for salvation, but I also have some references where it is used for judgement and wrath.

My question is what does it mean and how would that relate to this song, in the lyrics it says 'don't give up until you drink from the silver cup'.

    Ah yes, Grasshopper...

    ... The cup of salvation...

... is full of living water...

... for those who are willing...

    ... to drink from it.

Don't know the song. Not my type of music.

Genesis 44. Jospeh has his servants put his own silver cup in Benjamins sack of corn. The brothers are stopped on the way home, and Benjamin is accused of stealing the cup.

Joseph wanted to see how the other brothers would react. He remembered the way they betrayed him all those years ago, and sold him into slavery. Would they betray Benjamin and leave him to be a slave. But they had changed. Perhaps their consciences were pricking them. Benjamin was the youngest brother, still little more than a child. They HAD to take him home for their fathers sake.

That's if you believe the story.

I very much doubt the cup that Jesus used at his last meal - this was not a passover meal - was actual silver. The room and all the utensils were borrowed from the owner of the house.

And you saw what happened to Belloq when he did not choose wisely and chose the expensive looking silver cup, or grail. Indiana Jones chose the one that would be used by a carpenter, and gave his dad some water from it, saving the old man's life. And then they all rode off into the sunset, with Marcus leading the way home.

    Hollywood educated me.

In fairy tales silver is used as a deadly weapon against werewolves, witches, and other monsters By drinking out of the silver cup it signifies that the drinker isn't a monster and has a "pure heart".

Good to see someone looking at the bible as mythology, it makes it seem almost interesting.

In that vein, it's as WoG says ... silver is traditionally used to ward off werewolves etc. Fun :)

You're not familiar with America (the band)?

You're either under 40 or aren't particularly into music. They're as 'establishment' as The Beach Boys.

I'm English and in my 70's. While I quite enjoyed music by some groups, never been into any offbeat music. Ballads and songs with words I could hear and understand. My main love is classical music, operas and operattas. Although I'm now agnostic I still love Southern Gospel Music from the States.

The bible don't say none of that because it was just an ordinary cup.
In 'Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade', he had to guess which one it was among all the fancy ones, so he chose this simple wooden cup because "it's typical of a carpenter"..:)
