    Hi again, JohnHamilton.

Thank you for reading my post and taking time to respond. 'Cooking the books' smacks of conspiracy theories. I don't go there. It's a bad neighborhood. One's reasoning abilities can be stolen.

    Regards, stay safe 'n well.

Even if there was 'zero' crime in NYC, it would still be horribly congested and crowded, and beyond-belief expensive. Plus, in its structure, infrastructure, and function, IMHO, New York City became essentially obsolete after about the 1960's.

Possibly the one good thing about NYC is that, unlike big cities on the West Coast, it isn't susceptible to earthquakes....

If they are reliable, no, the problem is many locations deliberately do not have reliable data because politicians know the data makes them look bad. Then you have the problem of people no longer reporting crimes because the police never do anything about it.

Having already lived in The Bronx, I can say without a doubt I would not voluntarily do it again. While the little place we lived in I was likely as safe as one could be, it was a very small corner of a city that is nothing like it was 40 years ago.

I like having cows and horses for neighbors.

I’ve never liked cities, too many people and no room to breathe. I like my open spaces and woods and farmland with all the animals that go with it. I like sitting on the back deck not bothered by smog or airplane or car noises. I like when I leave for town not having to worry about whether I locked the front door or not or about crime. I don’t mind driving 8 miles to get groceries or to go to Home Depot. I think the bottom line is I’d never live in any city.

For me it would be weather and wind in winter so you can scratch off pretty much anything in the northern third of the country from coast to coast.

All cities, I live in the UK. I like living in the countryside, you often find most neighbours tend to be *******s. Everyone feels they own the road on where to park etc..

    You can't beat country life.

Its congested and crowded like any large city, but it is not obsolete, because the NYC metro generates as much economic output as all of Canada. As a matter of fact its the most productive area in the US. I know people love to hate NYC and LA, but it is what it is, - they bring a lot to the table.

Well, you're right... both NYC and LA are probably more indispensable to our current 'way of life' than most of us realize. I'm just very glad that each of these places is FAR away from me up here near the mountains of Colorado. That makes me sound like the classic definition of a "NIMBY", and I freely admit it. There's a LOT of undesirable, maddening crap in this country that most of us don't want to be anywhere near us, and we'll do nearly anything to avoid coming into frequent contact with it.

It's sad when I remember that back when I was just coming into my teenage years (LONG ago), LA and all of Southern California were considered to be absolutely magnificent places to live! New York City was a powerhouse 'bulwark' of robust capitalism, power, and a proud, 'New Yawk' arrogance which resonated well with the 'can-do' spirit of the whole country. And now? Yeah... look at us now.... :lonely:

Think if fair to say also that those willing to live an urban life tend to favor large "centralized" government where less accountability is given to the :"individual".

NYC today is seen as the global cradle of capitalism. That's how the rest o the world sees it. That has not changed, and probably won't. The only thing that has changed is how some Americans are told to hate everything about it, and sure enough, they can't stop ripping the two most productive States in the nation. That is how divided how we have become.

'What’s driving the rise of catalytic converter theft? “In 2018, the New York City Police Department said 200 catalytic converters were reported stolen. Last year, the number spiked to nearly 4,000.“'

They want anarchy because the sensible people in a Free System reject them.

None of you have to live in these cities, but for your knowledge, most likely these cities pay the bill wherever you live in America! but sure trash them , call them " crime infested shi$$...' but don't worry, these cities will still send you the tax $$$ they get from their citizen. After all, Citizen of these cities thinks all American poor or rich deserve a better life!

Catalytic converter thefts increased by 325% during Trump's term in office, and he was a 1-term guy.

I chose NYC in the poll because I like living in rural America. For my work , I have visited NYC at least 10 time in past 20 years. every time I go , I enjoy the city but I can’t wait to leave. It’s too crowded, too dirty and I hate the transportation. Nothing to do with politics. Just like any other Big city in the world, Mass population create problem which are hard to control.

I love Chicago. I think Chicago especially Lakeshore drive is the most beautify. But whenever I go there, I can’t wait to leave.

But you are right. Republican like to trash these Cities and the people who lives there, Yet, City like LA or NYC have been the backbone of US Economy for century and they will remain backbone of US economy in future.

My Fav big city is Helsinki, FIN . I would have loved to live there when I was in my 20s but now I like my midsize Wisconsin city where i live now!

If it had to be in the US my choice to live in would be Boston.
The list of cities I would never consider would be any other anywhere. I hate cities.

I would never live in NYC or Chicago, but I agree the Chicago downtown / lakeshore is nice to visit, and I did visit a lot when I lived in Michigan (long time ago). Wherever I go, I'm always happy to be back home, although now SE Florida is becoming so crowded and expensive, we are considering other options. Helsinki is good size, not too big and not too small, and LOTs or bars and restaurants + people are nice. I was there in December, and July last year.

I have family in MI, I go to MI 2-3 time a year. These days drive thru UP rather then taking I-94 via Chicago, I-94 near Chicago became too crowded even at 3 am in the morning, Wife is from Estonia so we usually fly to Helsinki and then take ferry to Tallin. If you go to Helsinki again in December, I would recommend visiting ‘Tallin Christmas Market”, one of the best in Europe.

If you voted for anywhere other than Portland, then you may wish to reconsider. Since Oregon de-criminalized almost all drugs, including meth, heroin, and Fentanyl, the street price of these drugs is now a fraction of the cost in other cities. Portland and the State of Oregon are pumping huge sums of money into the homeless people under the delusion that they are mentally ill, as opposed to a bunch of junkies. The combination of very cheap drugs, lack of criminal consequences and a superlative support system for those who want to spend a life constantly high attracts junkies from across the country. There is no bottom to how low Portland is going to sink in the future. As it stands now, significant postions of Portland look worse than the slums of Calcutta and it is only going to get worse.

    Dallas.

Or pretty much anywhere in Texas.

Texans are nuts, and they prey on the LGBTQ community down there.

No other US city compares to New York. Chicago is a distant second.
