I don't doubt that many would, but they are still products of the modern era falling under a modern majority opinion. Personally those two would not invoke the same sense of beauty that others would for me. But that still the majority opinion of today. The was a point in European history where the standard of beauty was larger women, and well larger men for the woman. The thinner form as beauty is historically a recent thing. We can also see it in many of our (humanity's) older artifacts. Although I don't doubt that symmetry plays a part. It's just not the only part and those others change across history.

As noted, that is only one part. There is so much else that goes into people's perception of beauty. And even with symmetry, the degree of such differs between people as to what is too much or too little. Want perfect symmetry? Put up a mirror along the middle of the face. What come up often disturbs people because it's too perfect of a symmetry. So even when you look at that one factor there is no universal agreement as to how much symmetry equates to beauty, nor where the upper and lower limits to the degree of such is.

Not Safe For Work I would have thought was well known by now. Private Message might be dating myself a bit, although I've never made cover-up for being over a half century old.

Proportion falls into a sub category of symmetry also.

Symmetry is symmetry btw, you don't get less or more symmetry, it is what it is, perfection.

For example, for men, your head should be the same size as your stomach. Anything else is not beauty, it's bias or fetish call it what you want.

Generally, ppl can't help the way they were born to look so it's unfair to judge ppl for that, which is why the subject should remain sensitive. I also don't condone calling fat ppl ugly btw as a poster here has done. Some ppl just like food too much and why not, if you've got nothing else really going on then eat some food, we all love food.

You seem to be an all or none type of guy [you'd get along really well with my wife!]. Perfection is fake [impossible, which is why computer animation never went over so big], so it is the flaws that create the beauty within the symmetry. If you take a look at somebody like Grace Kelly [who appears to have a pretty perfect face], I am sure that under enough scrutiny [magnification], one could find an infinite number of flaws. After all, perspective is everything.

I never heard of NSFW... but then, again, I never worked on an assembly line or in construction. I was an R&D and management type. The only unsafe conditions in my work environment consisted of hostile bosses... and they were few.

If I look at the faces of those who lived in or before the early 20th century , I am struck by the awkward arrangement of the faces...longer more prominent noses, chiseled cheekbones, gangly shoulders, ugly eyes and static lips.
100 years later I look around my town at the general population and hardly ever see an unattractive person.
It isn't makeup...it might be better health or food ( though in some cases there is too much fast food) or better housing.
But ISTM that my immediate world is generally becoming more attractive naturally.

I am unsure if you are serious or trolling me in humor, but in case of the former: NSFW means that the content is usually of an adult or risque nature such that it is inappropriate for work and may even constitute as a sexual harrasment issue.

People who say what you have posted, are looking only at the exterior - which is horribly shallow. Not that all pretty/handsome shells are empty, but most often, those that don't become dependent on their looks being their primary attractant, tend to develop the rest of themselves.

If you want something to just bump uglies with, have at it. For a permanent relationship, mental stimulation is better.

Which just further highlights how beauty is subjective. No doubt back then, they were looking at others and considering them beautiful.

Not sure how you get that, especially since I am one of the ones pointing out the subjectiveness of beauty.

Maybe, but how much in the way of flaws is there beauty and where's the line that leaves beauty, and where starts ugly? I'm asserting that those are two separate lines, BTW

Kinda of my point. Personally I find Grace Kelly neither beautiful nor anywhere near perfect. I don't find her ugly either. She just is. But others do find her beautiful. It is just simply opinion and the majority opinion of what is beauty shifts over time.

    I agree it’s horribly shallow.

We really don’t know what anybody looks like on this forum and we can only judge them on their words and not their looks.

Some people on this forum appear incredibly ugly to me solely due to their words. I wonder how many people on this thread would be willing to post an image of themselves so we can judge them based on their looks as well. Would anybody actually change their opinion of a member here if they actually saw what they look like? I wouldn’t change my opinion after being exposed to some of the ugliness on this forum even if one of the nastier members turned out to be a very handsome man or a very beautiful female. This is also true for the nicer and more thoughtful members, I wouldn’t change my opinion of them even if I perceived them to be an ugly male or female. To do so would be extremely shallow. I think personality is much more important than looks.

I also think if members posted an image and asked what others thought of their looks, their would be tons of different answers depending on ones preferences.

You are absolutely correct, although "bumping uglies" has its place too... I never wanted to marry every chick I dated.

Oh... you mean nasty stuff. Why didn't you just say so instead of using code words. Thanks. Got it now.

You just said that "... we all love food." and I generally agree except I think that even more people like good food.

In addition to playing the piano beautifully and being a master gardener, my wife took a couple of years off to go to chef school in NYC where we had an apartment in the East Village and she proceeded to work in 4 star restaurants while I wandered around the city drinking until she got out of school / work. After a nap, we would try out different restaurants that were recognized by the school.

That's been about 8 years ago and, even though I wash a lot of dishes, pots and pans, I still eat better than anyone I know.

I should loose about 20 pounds but a little bit of "Pound Power" comes in handy when you're blacksmithing.

    Bon Appetit

This dovetails nicely with my women are miserable thread. No guy would ever post this type of message. It's pure emotional nastiness.

Why? I disagree. Explain yourself. All I am saying is that beauty doesn’t dictate who you are, words and attitudes are more revealing. It is not emotional nastiness.

Really? Because someone thinks that basing everything on looks is shallow, they are miserable?

Reminds me of a "pig pool" I once heard of. Guys would put a dollar in a hat and whoever danced with the ugliest girl at the dance would take the pot. There was one gal that always came to the dance that was called "the dancing bear". Dancing with her meant you won automatically.

I only heard about this of course... ahem... cough, cough.
