place where i come from, nationality is determined by a belonging to your mother's and father's ethnicity and sometimes it is even accidentally mixed with the belonging to a certain religion. nevertheless, didn't notice people calling themselves Whites or Blacks. now seriously, it is race but why is does this question look so simple ?! no deep thinking behind?
Depending on ones views, "white" could be considered a "neo-nationality". Whites came from many different european nations, but the european settlers in the european colonies have been living together for over a hundred years, and there is much more in common between different european ethnicities than there is between different races. One excellent example of this is the Africaaners in South Africa. Their ancestors were a mixture of Dutch, German, and French, yet they have mixed together and now consider themselves one ethnicity, different than the later english settlers that came. The white "race" is certainly not homogenous, the broader "race" group composes several ethnicities within it- for example germanic, celtic, slavic. Similarly, the asian race also has much variety within it, and the many different asian ethnicities often prefer to stay amongst their own kind. Ethnic Koreans, even those that have lived in Japan for four generations, are sometimes considered second-class citizens, and are discriminated against. Apparently, Chinese, Koreans, and Japanese people look different enough that they can easily tell eachother apart, and each race considers its own the most attractive. But in America, the asians have been mixing together, much more so within their own race than outside it. The northern (Japan, china, taiwan, Korea) asians tend to live in separate communities from the southeast asians (Thai, Cambodian, Indonesian, Phillipino). Very interesting. Everyone is mixing, but this mixing is not randomly, certain ethnicities and races seem to be clustering together into distinctly separate groups.
