It doesn't have to be "lush" and green... just good grazing land. And there's plenty of that. You really do need to get out of the blue run ghetto. Take a drive along I-10 from San Diego to San Antonio sometime. I've driven that a dozen times. Its obvious you never have.

    That's what we call "Bandnudeln".

And who would you make real Spätzle?

I just remembered Mother making "egg noodles" and it was familiar.

I had some a couple of times over the years when my band would play in Ulm. Good stuff.

It's funny you mention that, Melb_muser; when I was young, we had a large annual fair, in my town (it was later turned into a big mall-- for a short time, the largest in the country), and my favorite food there-- though I don't know how authentic a dish, it was-- was called, "Appleflappen:" beer-battered, apples, deep fried crispy outside, and gooey within... Ahh, memories.

    Sehr lecker! :knifefork:

It must be hit, since there are so many names for it.

I have had what were called Spätzl (we spell it spaetzle) noodles, and they are very tasty (as with green beans). But I have developed some food sensitivities, over the years, so have not had them, in a good while. My favorite German dish, but also something I can't have anymore, is something I fell in love with, when I was still a boy. I am surprised that no one else has mentioned it, as I thought it was one of Germany's signature dishes. On top of that, I see there has been a long, associated conversation, about beef. I am, of course, talking about sauerbraten-- OMG, so good!!

I hesitate to tell you where I got a taste of it. It sounds silly, but I think of it this way: if it was delicious as a Libbey Land t.v. dinner (which were supposedly slanted to kids' tastes), just imagine how wonderful it must be, to have it authentically prepared!

Onions, however, have become a problem for me. The only way I can now tolerate them, is if they are cooked so long that they are liquified, as in an Indian curry.

    That name doesn't sound Australian.

EDIT: My grandmother is Polish, so I know potato pancakes. Funny, that my other grandmother never made them, since she was Irish!

Sehr lecker = German for very tasty
I come from German heritage on my dad's side.

Hilarious anecdote. Perhaps your Irish grandmother was a bit sick of potatoes!

It surely is a signature dish. Especially in the Southwest of Germany.

    I know right?
Yet 170 years later they're still going on about a little trouble getting hold of a few spuds.

My grandmothers roast pork, chopped spinach and knodles. Closest to heaven I will get to in this life.
