Interestingly and maybe aside from the politics involved in the first one, these are a couple of my fave guitar jams,

    and

Interestingly also, to me, gotta have the kit: almost always the beat that makes a song great for me.

So many friends of mine love this band and I was never able to get into it. Widespread Panic reminds me a bit of Little Feat. Lord that slide is absolutely buried in this tune. The rhythm riffs come through way more pronounced. But hey, here's something I bet you'll like: Bert Wills!!!

I probably should have put Duane Allman on my list. There are of course far more than ten greatest. So I went more with the music I liked. For example, Van Halen, Dr. Brian and Jeff Beck are as good as they get but I don't particularly care for their music. Townsend's greatness, IMHO, is more his ability to create music as opposed to his licks-I feel the same way about Mick Jones (The Clash) and Keith Richards.

Probably listen to Hendrix and Knopfler more than any other guitarists. The 'best' of course are still the classical Spanish guitarists Segovia and De Luca and some jazz players, like Wes Montgomery.

There may be tons of better guitarists. I'm not a musician, so I don't know. But these three registered with me. I find their sound almost magical:
Stevie Ray Vaughan and Double Trouble- love the Texas thang.
Carlos Santana- carried me thru an OD of organic mescaline.
Brian May- Killed it with Queen.
