Why did we go to war with the axis after Pearl Harbor but not Israel after uss liberty?

    Why didn't the U.S. and Britain go to war after the U.S. killed a dozen British soldiers in an air strike in Desert Storm in 1991?

    In war, people get killed by their own side all the time.

    Israel paid the equivalent of about $60M in 2020 dollars to the survivors of the men killed, the men who were wounded, and the US gov't.

    That's ridiculous. Once again Israel paid the U.S. back both in terms of monetary compensation and massively in terms of support for the U.S. in the war in Vietnam.

    I get that you don’t like what Israel does.
    But, it absolutely makes no sense to compare the attack by Israel on the naval ship USS Liberty to WW2.

    They transferred a number of Migs they had captured to the U.S. for evaluation to allow the U.S. to develop proper tactics to use in Vietnam.

    FDR set up Pearl Harbor as the perfect target.
    The Japanese saw the plum so ate it.
    Our ship should not have been attacked. Israel admitted it and made restitution as to money damages.
    They will never live down that attack.

    FDR decided to try making Pearl Harbor a target trying to bait the Japanese. That worked.
    He also tried sinking some of Hitler's subs but that gambit did not pay off when he did that.
