have we forgotten the dust bowl already? you know the millions of people that were displaced, then when they got where they were headed they died in mass numbers due to the low wages present in farm work? did you forget how the farmers unions required many farmers to underpay their employees so the "okies" wouldn't get into their heads that they have rights. oh wait, i forgot. in this society, if it isn't recent or it doesn't have a gun attached to it then nobody cares. oh, and if you disagree with me, try to alter your perspective to a person working in that industry because you didn't grow up in an area that had good schools, and you couldn't go to college, and you don't have any of your parents help. try to think like that for five minutes instead of thinking of yourself.
or should i use the progressive era? you remember what the "muckrakers" informed the public about? how factory work was an industry where you were underpayed, overworked, and had no job security? ever read, How the Other Half Lives by Jacob Riis? it relates quite heavily to this situation. you might see a few slums on tv but you haven't experienced them.

I would assume that twinkies are counted by robots, or more precisely, an automated system insures that the correct number end up in the box--no more and no less. Part of the quality control process in a food manufacturing plant a relative works at includes weighing each unit to make sure the weight is precise (being off weight indicates an off-mix); verifying the integrity of all the seams and seals, and running everything through a metal detector to make sure no shavings are being thrown off by the equipment. That is all done by machines. Humans just pull random product from the various lots to double check the quality control machines are working properly, and for taste testing

if your a manager and do not think they are worth the min wage, they can always count themselves

min wage is NOT "middle class", that is the lowest class you can get.... min wage

I'd say knowing how to count, and remember counts and not screw up so you dont lose the company money is a hell of a lot harder than dropping fries into grease or greeting people at Walmart.

Plus, Twinkies are just that important. Don't mess with Twinkies or I will mess with you haha.

Why should someone who sits at a desk all day signing papers while everyone else does the work (CEO's) be paid more than bare minimum wage?

The average CEO does not do any actual work aside from signing off on things. Others handle all the work, and the CEO signs papers finalizing their decisions while adding nothing to the labor themselves other than their signature. The guy counting twinkies does more work in a day than most CEO's.

Credit cards, yes, and also county, state and federal welfare programs. Those of us earning enough money the hard way are all subsidising the costs of living for these underpaid people. Ideally they would and could all earn more doing more valuable work, but then the jobs they do can't exactly be outsourced either. Are we going to have Mexican and Chinese workers come over on guest visas to do service sector jobs?

We also have to recognise, though, that there is something of a rock and a hard place situation here, because these low-paid jobs also do not generate a lot of wealth for the companies offering them, meaning that they can't really afford to pay a lot more to these workers due to basic economics. So, simply forcing businesses to pay more isn't necessarily the best thing, because they will have to make up the additional expense somehow. Not every business is supporting billionaire fat cats somewhere at the top.

personally i think the expectations of profit by businesses are unreasonable and all our safety nets are encouraging them to charge more than they realistically should be able to leading to a massive credit bubble.

Yep, worked at a fast food joint when I was 16 for about a year. It was easy money. If you call that hard work then you are in serious trouble.

Absolutely. Because you get paid for doing something that you can't be easily replaced with. Entertainers and athletes operate by basically being a "one person monopoly". Only they can provide what the market wants.

The market (a football team in my example) wants a quarterback that can throw at least 30 touchdowns a season with no more than 16 interceptions and a minimal number of fumbles and key mistakes.

The number of people who can do that on a consistent basis is very limited.

You complain about giving someone a living wage, but pay politicians over $100k per year to run up a $19 trillion national debt on you. On top of that, you made up this whole story...they have machines that count the twinkies. You deserve higher taxes.

Retailers face massive downward price pressure, which limits their profit margins, and thus what they are able to pay workers. Add to this government expenses paid by employers for their employees, such as FICA tax. I don't think people who are up in arms over employer practices necessarily understand the situation well enough to be spouting off about it.

It certainly is disgusting what public officials receive on the taxpayer's dime. It's downright insulting, in fact. They cast votes to provide themselves with a generous living and benefits. It's no wonder our system is so corrupt - the more this goes on, the worse sorts of people the system is bound to attract, and so the worse the system will grow in corruption in a vicious cycle.

Well I work an average of 12 hours a day so I know hard work. As for fast food, I and everyone I know who worked in fast food who wasnt at a register went home exhausted most days, often with burns if they were using a fryer. So in essence I think you're either full of it, or have no idea what you are talking about.

yes they have this but people are still unable to afford what they charge and have to rely on credit. Take away the credit card and the economy collapses that means people arent making enough to survive.

lol burnt out by working in a small area where the hardest thing to do was be able to read the screen and get orders correct? Please, if you think that is exhausting or complicated then you are lazy and weak minded. stop trying to make an entry level job sound complicated, its not rocket science.

Yeah I know all about 12 hour days, hell I know all about 75-80 hour weeks lol. Want to get paid $15/hr and up? get something that calls for it or become a manager at a fast food joint. But to expect to walk in and cook french fries, take out the garbage and mop the lobby and expect to be paid $15/hr? that just shows me i sure as hell wouldn't want you on my team. Prove yourself, then you get paid.

Let's be clear. Credit cards do not give people wealth at all. Not when every dollar spent with a card needs to be repaid. All a credit card does is allow people to be less financially responsible.

Well no that's a minuscule part of the job and the easiest. Seems you are lying afterall.

Nah I think youre completely ignorant. I've never heard anyone who has actually worked an extensive time in fast food call it "easy money" unless they were avoiding work whilst on the job.

Doing more than one day of what most people do as fast food joints is proof enough to be paid minimum wage. Luckily, most people agree and minimum wage will be around for a long time.

Also you seem to be thinking I work in fast food. I dont lol Though working in it for 12 hours a day would be tough.

exactly! It also allows companies to charge people more than tthey can afford because they can borrow and mortgage future earnings that may not be there (thereby distorting the market).
