That's fine but my point is that it doesn't matter which is why God didn't tell us. He did not fill the Bible with mysteries for us to solve he put things in there for context to complete the entire history.
The reason for the content of the Bible is to understand man's relationship with the god that the Bible describes. Any objective of explaining history is entirely separate and clearly not the goal of the Bible. The stories of Noah, Eden, Job, Abraham, Jericho, Sodom, Lot and the rest are not there for the purpose of having a more accurate timeline of events. They are there so that mankind may learn about man's relationship with god and god's intent.
Sure but things like how or when the earth were created are there for simply context which is why God didn't bother giving us specifics. I always find people funny who study things like Revelations as if we are ever supposed to know what it is like other than being bad.
Maybe or maybe I am right. You better hope you are though because it's gonna suck being you if you are wrong. I lose nothing either way.
The age of the Earth does not better inform Christianity of anything Christians needed to be informed of in terms of their understanding of their relationshi with the God they choose. In fact, claiming the Bible demands a ridiculously unsupportable understanding of the universe is no better than claiming the Bible is fallible. Claiming that God fakes every photon coming from stars is just one of the ridiculous ideas that any young Earth model would require.
I would suggest that your prime directive of disseminating the gospel is heavily depricated when it includes obvioulsy ridiculous interpretations of this universe. And, I'd point out that there are large numbers of Christians who do not share your view of a faked universe maintained by a trickster God.
You lose much of your life to believing, observing, studying, and spreading iron aged nonsense. You have chosen to be a person who accepts without good evidence, which has likely had negative impact in your life. You will have made poor decisions that were made without realizing this is the only life you have to live. You have lost part of your humanity by believing that all the bad in the world is part of the sky daddy's plan. So yes, you could lose plenty.
Not nearly pathetic as a functioning adult worshiping an imaginary character purely because he thinks he might not live forever in fake paradise, if he doesn't. That is very pathetic.
Oh, please, God, I had no idea you really are you. Please let me in. I want to sit on your lap. I'll lap dance.
Sorry for the sermon, but: In Matthew 25:30 on, Jesus says your life will be examined on the basis of how you performed as a Christian. Did you sell your posessions and give the proceeds to those in need? Or, do you think Jesus was wrong about rich men having trouble getting into heaven? Do you search out and provide for those in prison, in hospital, in the modern equivalents of poor houses? Do you serve those who live in sin and/or come from other countries - without difference or judgement, because they, too are the children of God? Jesus said in those passages that those who ARE his followers risk judgement. Christians are failing their own religion when they don't consider these factors.
Yes - and there are always a few nuts in the crowd - some with science degree's - but in any case - there is a reason the overwhelming consensus of scientists, philosophers, historians and so on - reject a literal reading of the Genesis story as demonstrably false. This does not mean that all that dissenters are nutty - Some are just not aware of the plethora of refutations .. most of which the creationist "PHD crowd" have no refutation. If we are talking billions of years ago - things are more fuzzy .. but the Bible claims a global flood wiped out all land creatures roughly 2100-2300 BC. That is not Billions of years ago - and things are not fuzzy. We have continuous culture throughout that period - in numerous places throughout the world.. Not possible unless one is to claim that God came in after the fact and planted false evidence to trick us into believing the creation story is false. So feel free to claim this - and no Physics PHD needed for the above refutation -
I believe your questions are best left between men and God, not between men and other men. Only God knows your heart. I don't know what you mean here. ^
He didn't fill anything. People added stories and metaphors and hearsay, not only to this collection of stories but to other similar documents. That is not a history book by any stretch of the imagination.
There is no science involved TO deny. I accept science, but this is not a question that science can answer. I am simply rejecting the belief that we somehow know how old Earth is even though we weren't there to observe it. It is perfectly okay to admit "I don't know"... I am also rejecting the belief that science supposedly makes use of supporting evidence. It does not. What is this "reality around us" that tells us how old Earth is?? Your belief about the age of the Earth is a religious belief, as is anyone else's belief about it... The sooner you come to terms with the truth that you (nor anyone else) have absolutely no clue how old Earth is, the better...
That's exactly what I said, genius... A law is simply a formalization of a theory (which is an explanatory argument). For example, let's look into what is now known as the 2nd Law of Thermodynamics. The theory involved here is that, in a closed system (such as the Sun, Earth, Space system), heat (the flow of thermal energy) ONLY flows from hot to cold. In other words, energy ALWAYS dissipates across a given system until it is uniform. In other words, entropy (the randomness of something) ALWAYS increases (or stays the same). It NEVER decreases. This theorization has been formalized (via mathematics) into a law, known as the 2nd Law of Thermodynamics, as follows: e(t+) >= e(t), where 'e' is entropy, and 't' is time. This theory (formalized into a law) has yet to be falsified. Until one can come up with an instance where, in a closed system, heat flows from cold to hot, which would falsify this theory, this theory remains as a theory of science. That is all that science is: A set of falsifiable theories. (IOW, a set of falsifiable models that predict nature) Regarding your "I know the age of the Earth to 1%" crap, there is no way to falsify the theory that the Earth is [insert very high number here] years old. The null hypothesis test (using a time travel machine) is not accessible, thus we cannot falsify the theory. It remains a religious belief.
I would agree with that. That's why I don't accept or reject any particular religious belief on the matter. I just shrug my shoulders and say "idk how old Earth is, nor do I care". As you point out here, if this was an important thing to know, then God would've told us. Bingo! The Bible is a beautiful recording of 'Creation', 'The Fall', 'Redemption', and 'Restoration'. We are currently inching closer and closer to 'Restoration'. In fact, I was taught in grade school, and I still like remembering this, an acronym for BIBLE: Beginning Instructions Before Leaving Earth It really is the most beautiful, useful, and informational book ever written! Even for someone who chooses not to believe that it is historical and prophetic truth, there is A LOT of knowledge and wise words contained therein.
