I don't believe that the protests started on University campuses. They have been going on for some time. University protests became a thing when the presidents of Harvard, U Penn and MIT were summoned before a congressional committee, gave responses that politicians and the media didn't like, and two were subsequently fired. But there were protests in other locations before that, such as marches over the Brooklyn Bridge.
