Man holding knife while walking toward police is told to stop, continues walking toward police while holding knife and is shot. Shootings don't get any more justified than that.
If those are the facts, I suppose, but sometimes it still is unfortunate if the person is hearing impaired or not up the snuff on the english. No idea what the circumstances were in this case. There was just a woman in ICU at the same hospital as a relative who died a week after being shot by the police in such a scenario when there was a big dust up in her apartment complex she went out in carrying a kitchen knife and couldn't understand the police commands because she couldn't speak english very well and they did their thing as soon as she took a step forward. It was justifiable on the police side of course, but I think still tragic since there was no indication she really had any beef with anybody or was really be aggressive. Just a real bad set of facts.
Yes, its tragic. In all liklihood he was bombed out of his mind on drugs or mentally ill, and potentially could have been rehabilitated and had happy years ahead of him. Maybe not likely, but certainly possible. Its just as possible that had the cops not shot him, he would've slit someones throat- one of the cops or a random passerby. Or it was just suicide by cop.
I have no idea of anything about the person in West Philly and so stated. The OP link had virtually no details.
If you have a knife and you're walking towards police from a few feet away while they're pointing guns at you and screaming at you, do you really have to be a PhD in English to figure out what they're saying? If you were in a foreign country and had never heard their language before, wouldn't you have enough brains to not approach police pointing guns at you no matter what?
No justification in firing 13 times and killing him. Why is it just in the US where this common event ends up with someone dead? Just waiting for someone to post that it also happens in some other non-comparable countries
First off, always post the video so people can make up their own mind, news sources aren't trustworthy on these things. IMO this is very borderline. Definitely a crazy guy with a knife, but IMO this looks more like suicide by cop than a guy about to go on a rampage. Cops were at a safe distance when they shot him, their lives weren't at a direct risk, neither were the lives of anyone else, so they had other alternatives than lethal force. In their place I would have simply shot him with a non-lethal weapon. On the video you don't see the cops even try to tase him, even though it's the most natural response in this situation...why? Or shoot him with a rubber bullet and knock him out. Works like a charm : Non-lethal weapons don't work if the guy is on drugs like PCP, but I don't think he is here, so I think it's a mistake to not at least try that first. US cops aren't racist, anyone claiming that is delusional as they're just as trigger-happy against whites as they are against blacks, there's countless video evidence to show that. Compare for example the Tamir Rice shooting (black guy points gun at cops and gets shot, happens to be a toy but they couldn't know that) to the Ryan Whitaker shooting (white guy opens the door to cops with a gun in hand, doesn't threaten anyone, gets shot on sight). However, US cops are a bit too trigger-happy in general, regardless of race. I wish they'd at least try to use other options than shoot to kill whenever they can.
Good shoot ...... bad shoot .... doesn't matter. The shopping has begun! Looters took shoes and clothes out of West Philadelphia businesses early Tuesday during a night of violence after Philadelphia police shot and killed a man with a knife. NBC10’s Randy Gyllenhaal reports. Video at link: https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.nbcphiladelphia.com/news/local/looting-violence-in-west-philadelphia-after-police-shooting/2574826/?amp
I'll guess! I'll guess! The problem you have with this is because it's 'cuz it was a black man that was shot. Right?
That's pretty funny but there is a whole lot of truth to that. Many of the "woke" lib/progs want us to be more like Europe. Europe has water cannons to quell riots. Why then don't we?
When someone comes at you with a weapon you fire until they are stopped. Why did you white out the portion of your post I have highlighted in red? You don't think you're being clever, do you?
The job of the police is not to kill. So I ask again, why is it just in the US where this common event ends up with someone dead? 'cause I wanted to.
Because then some ACLU attorney would sue the crapola out of a city and destroy an officer because the water pressure broke someone's wrist or put out an eye. Same thing with the tasers forced upon LEOs; immediately after they were mandated the personal-injury-durring-an-arrest lawsuits started.
good shoot, bad shoot, doesn't matter, the cops will get off with a hand slap and the rioters and looters will do their thing, nothing changes
yep, it's like police and mace\tasers\rubber bullets, it could be used responsibly, but we see cops abusing it as well - when the abuse is not punished, all use is seen as abuse how many times have we seen a cop taze someone, then give them a order within seconds and taze them again for not doing it, knowing their muscles can't do what they ask because they have been tazed - we need to get rid of bad cops, they make good cops look bad
That doesn't occur in other countries so perhaps the US should take a closer look at themselves. Perhaps you could list those winning lawsuits regarding tasers and compare the cost with lawsuits regarding unjustified shootings?
