Cats rock . Best of luck with yours. I had a maine coon stray I found in dumpster for 16 years who died last Nov. Got a American Bombay (parlor panther) black cat from shelter last April.
Congrat on your new room-mate.... cats and dogs are great companions. I've had both and the one thing I liked in the cat is that they are independent creatures, whereas the dog isn't..... you can leave a cat alone for the w/e, leaving it w/a litter pan, food and water (keep the food/water a distance away from the litter pan) and they're fine, but you can't a dog...... There's a saying about dogs & cats that's very true - "If you call a dog, they'll come to you - if you call a cat, they'll take a message"..... they are entertaining.
If your allergy kicks in, there's meds for it. A friend is allergic to cats and she has around 7 and takes meds for it - said it works. Speaking about personality - my last cat was a Manx and Moxy had the funniest personality. He'd come in from the cold, go straight to the heater and didn't curl up like a normal cat did - he'd throw himself on the floor, flat on his back spread-eagle w/butt towards the heater and go to sleep....... But he was a demanding little cuss too........
Very cute, like the stork has gotten into pet deliveries now. Patches? Gizmo? (I'm partial to Gizmo since I named my own boy kitten that). Or maybe Fuzzbug. There are so many possibilities with cats.
Not just any food either. Get something that's actually good, i.e. food without corn or other grains. That's no good for cats. Better food will cost more, but you won't be feeding your feline kitty junkfood.
Some cats aren't born to be 'indoor' cats..... the owners turn them into one, which I'd never liked. I think all animals should be able to enjoy the outdoors so mine had always been indoor & outdoor cats, but despite the fact that they're nocturnal animals, mine had to be in at night......
Brew, Moxy was an indoor/outdoor cat and he lived to be 14 yrs old... good life span for a cat... but as you said - stuff happens when they're outdoors .... just like it does for your kids....... Tomcats will quickly become barnyard brawlers if they're not fixed.
What a nice story - good for you & your mom. Go to the shelter and rescue a cat... it'll love you for it.
Depends on where you live a lot. Here we have too many cars and traffic for an outdoor cat to survive long. I agree I would love to be able to let the cat out to hunt like he would love too but he is better off inside and will live much longer.
My Gizmo cat is an adoptee I found at PetSmart. I was fortunate to find him still a kitten, though not a super tiny one anymore.
Maine Coons are BEAUTIFUL... and so are Norwegian Forest(?) - (need to look that up again to make sure about name) - cats......
I think if a pet is incapable of mammalian affection, it's best aquatic rather than terrestrial. I have 3 fish tanks of various sizes going One is fresh, one is "brackish" and one is salt.
Yeah he had awesome mane of hair. But the hairballs for him and the hair everywhere in house were downside.
I hadn't realized this thread recieved so many replies. I have been working a lot and haven't been checking PF much lately. xD Well update on my new kitten, it's a GIRL! Vet checked her out and said she's very healthy for a stray, also she was not micro-chipped and still needs to be spayed. We'll be getting that done in the next few months along with all her shots. She is about 6 months old and we decided to name her Rikku. She will be an indoor cat and we won't be de-clawing her. I can handle some scratches, already got a few from playing with her. She's very spoiled and very happy in her new home. =) Thanks all for your replies to my thread, I am still reading through them all! I can't believe how many people here have found or rescued a pet and given it a home. Makes me so happy to hear that. =D
Glad to hear you're not de-clawing her. If a cat ever accidentally got outside, they wouldn't be able to defend themselves, like get up a tree fast if they come face to tace w/a pit bull or whatever..... I always had a clawing pole for my cat. Kittens are adorable, but can be a pain - like climbing up my drapes, up to the top of my Xmas tree - they find all kinds of fun things to climb....... ENJOY!
Congrats on finding your new found purring friend! I don't believe everything is coincedence. I lost my yorkie/pom named "Doodles" about a yr. and a half ago. I swore we were so connected. My heart was totally broken. I was looking at craigslist just for the heck of it and saw this Pom. Out of all the callers the lady said that inquired, I was selected to adopt their Pom that was already named, "Baby". She is attached to my hip. I still miss Doodles but Baby has far exceeded my satisfaction in man's best friend!
No but Final Fantasy X did. xD My fiance has been naming his cats after Final Fantasy characters for a while now, so we decided to keep the theme going. =)
Did you ever get another kitty? I believe Gracie was a cat, right? I know you still mention her in your signature.
