I think that Phantom is far & away The best.I think Herbert Lom redefined SUSPENSE with
that singular performance. He took it back to where it was when another great actor
and favorite of mine Laird Cregar did 2 favorites of mine :
The Lodger { 1944 }
Hangover Square { 1945 } His last film.
Cregar had a unique quality. He was a big man { overweight } Like Sydney Greenstreet
yet had the mannerism or genteel quality that evoked respect and commanded instant authority
w/o being like a Victor McLaglen.

An absolute MUST for any Film buf.It has all the ingredients and in all the right
places. It tells the story and then captivates the viewer so that he/she can empathize
with the protagonist and feel the sorrow. That is what Movie-making is for me.
A good film develops a relationship with the viewer.A feeling of concern as if we know
that person playing the lead.
It is Horror the way Horror should be.Directed by Terence Fisher,a personal favorite of mine.

My favorite horror flicks are of the horror-comedy variety, and while there's a bunch of great ones out there, my personal favorite is the Evil Dead trilogy. The campyness of these films make them even more amusing - great B-Movie type stuff.

Who could ever forget this scene from Army of Darkness?

Army of Darkness is so bad, it's great...

Judging from this, I trust you've seen Tucker & Dale vs. Evil...

Also, if you were the one earlier in the thread who had already seen it, please disregard...lol

What is horror to you.? Is it a well told story like at a summer campsite,
where in the dead of night, strange woodsy sounds are heard alongside a crackling
fire as large strange things {fire smoke and soot with the occassional weird
flying bug } appear seemingly from out of nowhere to blur any lines.
Where the storyteller seems really serious and at times frightened themself,
like what - Blair Witch Project - should have been but due to a cheesy slcaker
budget and lrank amateurish ability couldn't manage.
Or some slasher movie where blood drips so plentiful {The Evil Dead } the only really
scarey thing that awaits a patron is how much longer the cruddy flick is gonna last.
- Hannibal - { 2001 } would have been great w/o the much talked about ending
scene { Cranium removal } just because it was meticulously crafted and told.
- Night of the Living Dead - { 1968 } Unwatchable in my Horror mind was
successful just because.Because cult fans need something to cult over.
Nothing else explains it.It is flat out Dopey,Cheap and has no story.
Like most TROMA.Or Italian Horror.Therein explains the Horror Movie dilemna.
It focuses way too much importance on Peer Pressure.Blair Witch proves that.
Can anyopne explain why Horror Movies NEVER Win Academy Awards.
Well Anthony Hopkins did.Whenever he makes an appearance at the Academy
Awards { The Oscars for those G.Romero fans who can't seem to focus }
they always play the score from -The Silence of the Lambs - which is in the
THRILLER Genre { yeah right } winning FIVE Oscars.Because heaven forbid some lowly
Horror movie gots any Oscar.
Can someone explain to me why - I Bury the Living - {1958} which has NO horror, not
one speck in it,is considered a Horror yet, - The Silence of the Lambs - which is
shockingly FILLED with True Horror,is classified as some Thriller.
I think Movie bufs are being played for Stooges.I do.

Right now, I'm looking forward to seeing three horror flicks in particular...

The new "Evil Dead,"

The ABC's of Death (don't know if this is gonna be genuinely good, but, the premise intrigues me),

and, the remake of "Carrie," as that is one of my favorite horror flicks, originally written by one of my favorite authors, Stephen King...

Also, I can't wait to pick up "Sinister" on Blu-Ray...

I absolutely loved that movie...

Problem I have with "Evil Dead" is....now, when I see Bruce Campbell...I can't help thinking of "Ash" in Part Three-

"Good? Bad? I'm the one with the gun."

BTW, I'd go with "Halloween"...the first and original with Jamie Lee Curtis. Pacing, acting, score, cinematography, even the "cheapness" of the look of the film (a bit grainy by today's standard)....could watch it over and over. (Plus it's the last time you see JLC with shoulder-length hair and her boobs aren't particularly prominent. :D )

Yeah, it's almost impossible to think of Bruce Campbell without thinking of Evil Dead...

And, the original Halloween is glorious!!!

Also, the first Rob Zombie remake was really good...

But, you have ot stop there, cause the second one sucked!

Event though Army of Darkness is my favorite in the series, I hope the veered away from the campiness and went for scary with this one.

Judging from the red band trailer I posted above, they seem to have gone with the scary...

I looked up the trailer (for some reason I no longer can view videos posted this forum most of the time), your right it did seem promising .. but trailers can be deceiving.

I was never really a fan of the Halloween series or Jason. I never found any of them to be scary.

Speaking of campy, I recently watched the series Todd and the Book of Pure Evil, I would highly recommend it to horror fans with a sense of humor.

Meh, Friday the 13th & Halloween aren't really scary, per se, with the exception of, say, the first two, maybe three, Friday the 13th flicks, the first two Halloween movies, and, the reboots of Friday the 13th & Halloween...

They just developed a huge cult following, and, that's why they're such a big deal now...

For the most part, they're all gore & jump scares anymore...

Buuuuuuuuuut, I'll still watch em though...lol

:) To be honest I am not even sure which ones I have seen, I will have to put the first couple ones on my list to see if I saw them or not.

I am the same way with zombie movies, I have watched dozens but can only think of one ever that was remotely scary, despite this and knowing full well that I am to be almost certainly disappointed beyond some laughs I never can seem to turn down an opportunity to watch them.

No kidding...

I'm a huge sucker for zombie flicks...

Can't wait to see World War Z...

Also, it's a (*)(*)(*)(*) shame that Zombieland 2 got scrapped, since the first one was a legitimately good movie, along with being funny as hell!!!

Me too on World War Z, though the trailers I have seen have me a little worried as it seems to completely deviate from the book and gives zombies the ability to swarm like ants. Which I find to be unnecessary. Being eaten alive by a rabid human is scary enough in of itself.

I didn't realize they were thinking about putting out another Zombieland, it was an enjoyable movie. I loved the scene with Bill Murry.

I would say, the zombie-vampire-werewolf genre is played out at this point.
