They sacked their Gov. They prosecuted the bankers. They wrote a new constitution, which the people played a full part in.

And now they are protecting their children, and cleaning out filth.

Iceland's bid to ban web porn: Nation could become first western country to block filth over fears of effects on children

Iceland could become the first Western democracy to block all internet porn under radical new proposals.

Fears about the damaging effects on children have led the government to work on legal measures to try and stop the flood of graphic sexual material reaching the island’s shores.

Interior Minister Ögmundur Jónasson has set up working parties to find the best ways to stem the tide of online images and videos being accessed by young people through computers, games consoles and smartphones.

Methods under consideration include blocking porn IP addresses and making it illegal to use Icelandic credit cards to access x-rated sites.

A law forbidding the printing and distribution of porn has long been in place in the Nordic nation – but it has yet to be updated to cover the internet.

Two years ago, the Icelandic Parliament – led by female prime minister Jóhanna Sigurðardóttir - successfully banned all strip clubs on the grounds that they violated the civil rights of the women who worked there and were harmful to society.

This argument - that porn violates the rights of both women who appear in it and children who are exposed to it - is the cornerstone of the new proposals under discussion.

The investigation was followed by a further consultation on porn, which included teachers, law enforcers and organisations working with abused children.

It concluded that the extremely violent nature of the material now freely available on the web was increasing the intensity of sex attacks.

It also found that children exposed to violent pornography at an early age were showing the similar signs of trauma as youngsters who had been actually abused

Jack, I thought you were a libertarian.

Don't want your kids watching porn, then parent them.

For some reason I think a lack of adult interaction does more damage to kids these days then porn, violent media, or anything else we let babysit children these days.

ban porn and the businesses will just move overseas.

And a very active nanny state! Now EVERY bit of internet traffic must be accessible to be read and filtered through government servers!

Also, I wonder how the righties will feel about this when they find out it includes shootings and war movies?

It's Iceland, an insignificant country with no power, why should anyone care what they do?

Figures you would support exposing CHILDREN to pornography.

    - - - Updated - - -

Get back to us when your HAVE KIDS, instead of still being one.

Your attitude will become more "sheltering" when you have your own brood to look after, I assure you.

That is who the nation of Iceland are seeking to protect from the porn industry. I support the right of the people of Iceland to determine what is best for their society, and it appears that they have decided that PORN is not.

They ACTUALLY GET TO DISAGREE WITH YOU!!!!??? Astounding...huh?

Why not actually READ THE OP, instead of always jumping up and trumpeting the FACT that you haven't a clue what you are sqwauking about...?

IT will never work. Simply to many websites, and ways around these types of things. And even if it does work, kids will just revert to what every generation pre 2000 did. Share playboys, and pause movies right when a nude scene comes on XD. There is also this thing called "imagination". There is nothing anyone will ever be able to do to stop kids from masturbating its something everyone does when their a teenager (and beyond). Humans have urges.

I think it is reasonable not to yell fire in a crowded theater... in this way, yes. I support censorship.

I think it is reasonable to prevent children from having access to internet porn. There is currently no requirement but that you click on a link... and while google tries to do safe searching, and programs exist like net nanny etc... you can only cover YOUR PCs. As pretty much anything with a screen now has web access... it is dangerous to leave all of these tablets, phones, kiosks etc etc with access to pornography. Your desire for anonymity does not outweigh my desire to shelter my children from the darkest corners of the internet.

Innocent clicks can take very disturbing turns. So yes. Censor it. Force age verification via credit cards etc.

For Iceland? Sure, if that's what they want....unlike you, I don't seek to FORCE MY VIEWS UPON THEM....or anyone else.

Communities here absolutely have the right to regulate pornography, etc., as well.

Do you support children having access to pornography...YES OR NO?

Google, bing, and other search engines already have search settings, and now if you look something up on google images it doesn't show pornographic images (for most words), even without "safe search" on. Looking up "c ock" on google images will now yield almost exclusively innumerable pictures of roosters. (there are a couple of "adult images, but other words, such as black throated blue warbler will show 0).

Also, what the (*)(*)(*)(*) are you doing letting your 5 year old use the internet unsupervised? There are far worse things than cumshots out there.

Censoring things for being "oscene", or "causing social decay" is an extremely slippery slope. First porn gets censored, then violence, then criticism of the government....

This is ALL that should matter, quit with the feeble excuses that are are tacit approval of this sort of filth.

It is not air. We lived without it before, and we can do so again. We have had about one poster here(CNTRL), who seems to be getting the bigger picture here, this is not about 'freedom' this is about a definite corrosive force, that is as corruptive as giving crack out, in the interests of 'freedom'.

Aside from CNTRL, and maybe one other, we have had one petulant show of typical 'Who are Iceland' arrogance, and we have had the personal life of their PM gone into. That is what is wrong with so many American voters, imo. They are too busy, as they would with their minds trained to fuss over the small detail of a person, going into trivia and being arrogant, than the actual bigger picture, and anything of substance.
