I am curious to know what it is about one's particular deity that makes it better than the other ones. There are many versions wholeheartedly believed in by many different people, so what is it that would show one to be correct, and all the others mistaken?
Theres just one divine. Youll find that theologians and philosophers from various different religious traditions have developed very similar concepts about that divine. When it comes to the differences: theres no correct and mistaken, we are all just perceiving God from a different angle and no human can get the full picture in this life.
Except that no one has actually perceived God. They perceive things that are then attributed to God(baselessly), but that's not the same thing.
I can agree...but the question was posed to the religious. While it is obvious to me the universe must have something behind it, that does not mean I see a "God". I suppose my confusion is concerning the manmade entities people claim as their own.
A lot of people including myself claim to have perceived God. Your claim that these people attributed these perceptions to God baselessly is just as baseless. You have no more proof for your claim than I have for mine. So maybe none of us should indulge in too much chauvinism here.
that post is your own, except when I borrowed it, for a quote. ghonapsyphilherpalaids ................ have you ever seen that before (the word; man made) As far as what 'behind' everything, i find it quite easy to see natures process of evolution, behind everything that is not manmade. it is ONLY of belief, that something other than natures processes, are causing natures processes. i find the easiest way to STOP the BS, is to STOP the false witness (no false misleading bull). ie.... if a wingnut claims to witness a 'god' he best produce it, or wake up dead.....................; no ONE, not even a 'god' is supposed to lie (false witness/mislead)
Truth is the God of the Christians. The Euphemism of Christ has been used for centuries during a time when the concept of Truth was too vague to make the point we saw in the Civil Rights Movement, when Rev Martin Luther King lay down his life for and against the sins of unthinking Americans.
So....no one can explain the "Why"? Not in any way convincing to me...there seems no reason to accept a "God"....either try harder, or accept the fact you have failed to "Spread the Word".
WTF?.....it seems to me the intent was extremely clear (had you bothered to read the OP), and still is to anyone not deciding to place words into the mouths of others. I am asking those who believe in one god or another, to explain why one would accept theirs above another...pretty straight forward I would hope, and taking a snippet of comment from me as the reason for the thread is obviously meant to hijack the topic.
Are you asking because you are seeking a "god" to believe in or for an individual to justify their "faith"?
No....I am asking to gain insight as to why people think the god they follow is better than someone elses.....seriously, I could not have been more clear in my OP.
Your words may be clear; however, my (admittedly small) experience has been there is always an underlying cause/subtext/methodology for such a question. It usually (again my perception) is an effort to denigrate and berate an individual who attempts to explain their belief in whatever "god" may be part of their belief system.
that it's mine. if i thought it would be someone else's it would be admitting i'm wrong about the most fundmental principals of my life. that's worse than fat, drunk and stupid.
I suppose nothing...yet I still do not understand why you God is better than someone elses, unless these Gods only exist in the mind of the individual who believes in it.
it's possible, but of all the gods, mine has is the only one to have better morals than His humans. those Greek gods were a bunch of (*)(*)(*)(*)(*)(*) bags.
How is asking you a question using the very words you used putting words into your mouth? As for the OP: I understood it in the same way the poster AuntiE understood it. Yet, I gave you a polite answer that you liked. To paraphrase this answer again: I believe that there is just one God who is worshipped in many different ways none of which is necessarily better or worse than the other. You on the other hand give the impression that you think your disbelief is better than any persons belief in a deity. So whos the arrogant one here?
The problem with this question is that most people cannot describe the deity they worship. They simply call that deity "God." There is no name or predefined version of this "God" they worship. Even when people claim to worship the same deity they will give drastically different versions of who that deity is if you ask them to describe their deity. To most people, "God" means that there is an all powerful being who completely agrees with them and will justify their every action when they die while punishing those who disagreed with them. Few people actually follow the teachings of a deity they can name. Most just follow the deity concept so they can pretend there is a supernatural force that proves their opinions are the correct opinions. Quite frankly, this country currently has more versions of "God" than ancient Greece and Rome combined. Yet everyone believes they are worshiping the same deity.
Whoa. Some say that the Geek gods were deliberately made immoral and absurd so that they would not be taken too seriously. In other words, blatant mythology. The Hebrews, on the other hand, claimed that their ancesters walked and talked with God, and God told them to write certain things. In other words, the real deal, a personal God, but an anthropomorphic schizo who blamed his creation for being imperfect (corrupted), corrected his mistake by drowning it, and then offered a scapegoat (the devil) as an alabi for his own diabolism. My preference is better than all the others: an impersonal and nonmoral source, the nonbeing nonmanifest be-ness, which, when manifest, is energy and consciousness, and constitutes all things minute and immense in stages of birth, growth, fecundity, and dissolution.
So.... the Aztecs with their offerings of still-beating human hearts to your god were doing just fine and if you think you worship better you are just being arrogant? "Narrow is the way" must notta meant nothing.
then your god is a pharaoh (Commands are egyptian, well before (1000's of year before) anything of your god.)
