HAPPY THANKSGIVING EVERYBODY!!*** Like my Dad, and his Dad before him I'm a real Turkey Junky.... However not the Kids,,,grrrrrrrrrrr. Wouldn't you know it,,they hate the Bird,,,,to dry. Now not to criticize the wife's cooking [Hi Honey] some people just do NOT like Turkey, soooooooo In the true spirit of friendship and including everybody,,,,WHAT'S YOUR FAVORITE,,,[or next favorite] MEAL? What would you rather have than TURKEY? The KING OF THE HOLIDAY* I have my favorite....... Yup!, a regular T REX!,,,,,gimme the Beef,,,LOL So what tickles your tonsils?,,,,[even if you don't have them],,,,LOL
Give what? Your favorite recipe? Any hints, tips, anything you wish to share? Do you shop, cook, clean up after yourself, or do you just sit around and eat? Do you wear an apron?
Turkey is it for Thanksgiving. Then its turkey pot pie, turkey sandwiches, turkey soup and food for the dog. Use as much of the turkey as you can, is a tradition passed down for generations. We havent found a good recipe for the bones yet.
I do most prep the night before and clean up.. set the table for the next day.. and yes I wer an apron.
No recipe, but nothing goes to waste, not even the bones... Fertilizer, raccoon lure, wind chimes to scare the neighbors, puzzle (put the turkey back together).......
This year it will be small.. six people, but for decades I cooked for 20. Small turkey .... 12 pounds bought fresh and brined overnight. I wear clogs and clothing under the apron.
Food is secondary to the journey... when you have a sister who is a vegan...no turkey whatsoever. More like Tofu. My Thanksgiving: I rent a Cessna 172 and fly to my sister's home city, Denver, Colorado (weather permitting) about a 60/40 proposition most years as I need a 3 day window of decent weather to safely operate in. This is taking into account a round trip route from a home base in St. Louis, Missouri. If the forecast is looking iffy, I drive. A rather boring drive going through Kansas, which appears to be flat as a pancake near as I can tell. Much more fun to fly, than drive, but Mother Nature makes that decision for me as to the mode of travel.
I'll eat some of the turkey but I'm not a big fan of it, because like you said, it's so dry! Have to smother it in gravy. I might try the dark meat this year just to see if it's a little juicier. I'll certainly stuff myself with stuffing and taters though. Haha. And the family will mingle a bit, take names for the Christmas gag gift, and then we'll all leave - "Oh yeah, sorry I have this thing, good seeing you distant cousins I never talk to but see posting dumb stuff on Facebook all the time." lol This is the problem when the family gets too huge and distant. Honestly when I have kids and a family of my own I'm going to start having more personal Thanksgivings with maybe just my mom and brothers. My hunny is lucky, he's going to his dad's for Thanksgiving and it'll just be him, his mom, his step-mom, his dad, and his older brother and his niece. Nice, quiet intimate family gathering. I'd go with him, but I missed Grandpa's 80th birthday a few weeks ago, had to work, so gonna see Grandpa a few more times before he kicks the bucket.
Ahem,,,I do it all.....Cook, set table,,,,EAT,,,pour the wine,,,,and help clean......I'm a full service Husband,,no slacker here Ma'm
That was on Barney Miller once, where this one cop was disgusted that they couldn't put away this hipster big city loving con man they'd caught after years of trying because he was going into witness protection. "They're gonna send you to Kansas, you know what they got in Kansas? Wheat!." OTOH I drove across it with a friend who was of Russian origin and he literally broke into song at one point. Said he felt like he was back home. If your children dislike dry turkey you should get one of these indoor ultra safe deep friers. Just even then DON'T FRY AN UNTHAWED TURKEY. Go to the store and find someone who's actually knowledgeable to tell you how and/or check YouTube. Fiery death awaits otherwise. Fried turkey is supposedly like fugu fish, pricey, dangerous and delicious enough to be worth it. I'm only one person so I go out on Thanksgiving, Sirloin with three sides and free dessert is on special at the 24/7 Denny's this year. I had a GF once who prepared the whole thing in nothing but an apron. That's when we started going out, hard to find places open that late too.
She's cooking a Turkey for God's sake, what the hell do socks have to do with it? - - - Updated - - - Agreed,,,huge difference...much juicer too..
Does anyone invite someone who does not have friends/family, cook for others, work at a soup kitchen?
Try the thigh meat,,fantastic. I have always been a thigh man myself.............[dont say it shangrila]
Yes I always host a few of the inmates from Rikers Island,,,,,,,, COME ON!!!!!!,,,,,,,You are ruining my thread...
We will definitely have to try that when we start holding our own Thanksgivings! My hunny is a fabulous cook, so I will tell him. =D
