A proposal for a soda tax from an arrogant and spiteful New Yorker. http://www.nytimes.com/2014/07/30/o...g-the-national-soda-tax.html?ref=opinion&_r=0 Do these people have any functional brain cells left in their heads? No new taxation is acceptable unless offset by a greater tax cut elsewhere. The only way a soda tax is acceptable is if there is a 1% across-the-board reduction in income tax rates. That would edge the US more toward a consumption-based taxation system. But an additional tax with no offsetting tax cut just ain’t gonna fly.
I'm against all 'sin taxes', but it I had to choose one to apply it would be a tax on bottled water. (*)(*)(*)(*) has gotten out of hand.
Whats wrong with water from the (*)(*)(*)(*)ing tap.................after all that's where most bottled water come from................... - - - Updated - - - Oh don't worry.......you will be means tested and "rich" people will have to pay 5 cents an ounce
I'm all for vice taxes. People who want to indulge in destructive behavior, especially those that directly or indirectly harm others, should pay. Whether it's a speeding ticket or an alcohol tax, I don't see the harm. Why is she "spiteful"? Is it because you say so?
Why exactly should the government punish me monetarily for drinking soda? It doesn't hurt anybody. It's extremely, extremely difficult to make yourself overweight purely on soda. Plus, I don't see why it's up to them what I eat anyway.
Why do people treat soda as if it were the life blood of mankind? It's not food and contributes zero to nutrition...tax it.
Alright lets tax every food item that isn't considered part of a healthy balanced diet by the FDA. Sounds like a wonderful idea....(sarcasm)
Spoken as a dyed in the wool member of the compassionate for the poor political group known as the Democratic Party.
Tell tale sign of a Marxist. You can only have what they deem is a "necessity". It worked out great for the Soviet Union.
Exactly. It's not food. It doesn't nourish you. And it's not drink. It doesn't hydrate you. It's a sweet thing that should be treated as a special treat. I'm really not that concerned about people's ability to afford it. And I doubt a tax of around a penny an oz is really going to take away that many customers anyway. It'll make us a lot of money though and cut down the deficit.
It's amazing how eager some people are to empower the government to steal more money from poor people when it's attached to a behavior of which they disapprove.
I want the freedom to drink whatever I damn well please and you should have the same freedom as well. No one in an office somewhere should be trying to make you eat and drink the way they think is best. Why the hell do they get to decide? (*)(*)(*)(*) them, and (*)(*)(*)(*) you if you support this crap.
We gotta get some more tax revenue so we can support all those thousands and thousands of illegal aliens that need housing, clothing, food, medical services, educations, etc.
