Of course, the GOP's successful "Southern Strategy" is as well documented by contemporary documents (Here is one such a valuable resource) as Southern Democrats' failed "Southern Strategy" 0f 1861-1865.

Neither Party (whether they pulled theirs off or not) is eager to admit to them now, of course, but reliable records attest to both and denial of either is futile - and quite silly, actually.

Alberto Gonzales resigned because he had clearly purjured himself before the House Reform and Government Oversight Committee regarding voter caging.

The US attorneys he dismissed were removed because Gonzales and Rove were running a program to install political operatives in these position with the express intent of running voter caging operations in their respective states. The coordinator of the operation was Monica Goodling, who had been elevated to the high post of Assistant Attorney General dispite having no real experience other than her freshly minted bible college law degree.

She was smart enough to cop a plea to mulitple violations of the Hatch Act in return for upending the entire scheme.

The nature of the appointments and their purpose was revealed in testimony before the Committee.

Every single one of the US attorneys interviewed by the committee promptly resigned, as did Goodling and Gonzales.

This was a concerted campaign run out of the White House by Rove and Gonzales. They had planned on running voter caging operations in several states until they got caught.

Republican National Committee Chairman Ken Mehlman apologized to one of the nation's largest black civil rights groups Thursday, saying Republicans had not done enough to court blacks in the past and had exploited racial strife to court white voters, particularly in the South.

"It's not healthy for the country for our political parties to be so racially polarized," said Republican National Committee Chairman Ken Mehlman.

"Some Republicans gave up on winning the African-American vote, looking the other way or trying to benefit politically from racial polarization," Mehlman said at the annual convention of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People. "I am here today as the Republican chairman to tell you we were wrong."

Mehlman's apology to the NAACP at the group's convention in Milwaukee marked the first time a top Republican Party leader has denounced the so-called Southern Strategy employed by Richard Nixon and other Republicans to peel away white voters in what was then the heavily Democratic South. Beginning in the mid-1960s, Republicans encouraged disaffected Southern white voters to vote Republican by blaming pro-civil rights Democrats for racial unrest and other racial problems.

"Ken (Mehlman) said it was wrong to try and benefit from racial polarization. We agree fully," McClellan said.
