Yes, that's what an ultra-"progressive" staff writer Gersh Kuntzman at the New York Daily News wrote: http://www.nydailynews.com/news/crime/firing-ar-15-horrifying-dangerous-loud-article-1.2673201 Apparently he did not want to do the usual anti-gunner hit piece filled with "guns are bad" whines. He wanted to do a fact based piece based on his personal experience. What is it like to Fire an AR-15? It's horrifying, menacing, and very very loud It felt to me like a bazooka — and sounded like a cannon. One day after 49 people were killed in the Orlando shooting, I traveled to Philadelphia to better understand the firepower of military-style weapons and, hopefully, explain their appeal to gun lovers. But mostly, I was just terrified. Yea, firing an AR-15 is like a bazooka. Millions of women own AR-15's, looks like all those women are more manly than little Gersh. I’ve shot pistols before, but never something like an AR-15. Squeeze lightly on the trigger and the resulting explosion of firepower is humbling and deafening (even with ear protection). The recoil bruised my shoulder, which can happen if you don't know what you're doing. The brass shell casings disoriented me as they flew past my face. The smell of sulfur and destruction made me sick. The explosions — loud like a bomb — gave me a temporary form of PTSD. For at least an hour after firing the gun just a few times, I was anxious and irritable........ Even in semi-automatic mode, it is very simple to squeeze off two dozen rounds before you even know what has happened. And poor Gersh lives in NY, he must be totally overwhelmed every day. Does he go to work by himself? I hope he has a card stapled in his jacket so when he gets lost and confused people can call his mommie to come get him. <Rule 3>
That sounds like a normal person's reaction to firing such a weapon. He's not some hoplophile who gets a sick thrill from playing around with an instrument of death.
Obviously you have not ever fired an AR-15. Its the most popular rifle in the USA because it is light, easy to control, has low recoil, is ergonomic. All the firs time shooters I have seen who use an AR-15 have the opposite reaction from you and little Gersh. They are surprised at how easy it is to use, and how it is not nearly as intimidating as they were led to believe by the ignorant gun banners.
That is absolutely not normal. I have seen many people shoot the .223 round for the first time. The low recoil is why it has become the most popular selling rifle in America. I teach people to shoot. It feels the same if it's coming out of a wood stock hunting rifle or the AR15. The ballistics are identical. Funny that the other hunting rifles that don't look like the "scary" AR aren't targeted for a ban. People will use handguns to kill approximately 8000 people this year as opposed to approximately 350 with all rifles combined (not just ARs, but all rifles). Which is the real instrument of death?
I have brought a couple small women to the range for first time shooting, after a couple boxes of .22 i asked them if they wanted to try the .223 they did and the only complaint they had was it was heavy, I have it as a competition rifle so has a heavy barrel on it. Aside from that they loved it.
Even people who want an AR15 type if weapon and are not criminals, not on the no fly list, are not crazy should be able to have one.
Pure BS, I would doubt that he has ever fired an AR15...Let me put my Marlin guide gun .45-70 in this wimps hands and then let him fire an AR15...I remember my firearms instructor in basic training holding the M16 to his groin and pull the trigger...recoil like a bazooka...What a maroon as Bugs Bunny would say...
When in Basic Training at Ft Benning, we were first introduced to the M16 and a few of the guys were actually afraid to fire it, lol. One of the Drill Sgt's called up a recruit and placed the butt of the M16 against the recruit's dick and pulled the trigger, then asked the recruit "Did that hurt?" Recruit replied "NO, DRILL SGT!" That convinced maybe 2 or 3 guys to go ahead and shoot live fire. The rest of them had to go "practice" with MILES equipment and blanks. Never did understand why someone afraid to fire a rifle would join the Infantry though. Point being, the AR15 is a cream puff to shoot. - - - Updated - - - Seems to have been a thing, lol.
Oh that is just special. All this over a gun that is far to small in caliber for deer hunting? He would have been better off describing what is like to be a terrified, panty-waisted little worm.
I bet he drives a car everyday...More auto accident deaths than accidental firearm deaths. So do you, me, I ride a bike and have to worry about SFIC's (stupid f****** in cars) everyday.
err, PTSD? really? wow. listen, I'm a Liberal. But I also shoot guns on occasion and I own a rifle. and Ive shot an AR-15. Its not the crazy experience this guy describes. Firing a shotgun is much more explosive, as it has a lot more gunpowder.
And now you know why liberals and progressives have earned the label of being a pantiwaist. Of firing an AR-15 is "very very loud" and felt like a bazooka ??? First of all bazookas aka rocket launchers are recoilless, there's no recoil. I wonder how this pantiwaist lib would have described shooting a real battle rifle like the M-1 Garand, M-14, Kar-98 or 03 Springfield that are chambered for a man killer not a varmint cartridge like the AR-15 ? The AR-15/M-16's have little recoil compared to a real high power rifle.
True. If an AR gives the little dip(*)(*)(*)(*) a sore shoulder, an M-14 would split him in half. Too bad he didn't go with an M-14.
Apparently 7 year old girls have more mental (and apparently physical) fortitude. lol what a moron.
I've fired numerous guns. I have never once envisioned " dozens of bodies falling in front of your barrel." The writer is a sick man, with major problems. I hope he never decides to buy a gun. He's irrational and scary.
If you shoot guns regularly, I strongly urge double hearing protection. Ear plugs and ear muffs. I have tinnitus, not from shooting, and it is at times...hell. Shooting a gun is on average rated at 149dB. That's equivalent to a jet engine. Protect your hearing.
