Queue the histrionics. Where on earth are the smug elitist liberals going to find their yard guy if he has to also speak english? Liberals demand the underclass. The require it. The uneducated, unwashed must be theirs to control and own. It's the very pillar of the plantation society.

Basically, the bill does away with the family based categories for brothers/sisters of U.S. citizens and adult (over 21) children of citizens and permanent residents. These categories are replaced by a 'point system', of which English proficiency is but one category. Additionally, it eliminates the absurd 'visa lottery' which gave out 50,000 visas a year to people who have never seen or operated a flush toilet. The EB-5 investor program is kept but the required investment is increased to $1.8 million I believe. Immediate relative spouses and children of U.S. citizens are maintained without a quota. It looks like parents of citizens may have been eliminated and replaced by a 'caretaker visa' which seems reasonable. All in all a pretty good plan once you get past all the maudlin liberal left whining about Albert Einstein 'wouldn't be able to immigrate under this plan' nonsense.......

That's typical of some of the amazingly dumb responses from critics to this bill from the left.

    1. This bill doesn't get rid of legal immigrants.

    2. My ancestors, to the best of my knowledge, came over here as unskilled labor, However unskilled labor was in pretty big demand 200 years ago. Now, not so much. Why should we still have immigration rules for the 19th century when millions of unskilled laborers were required? It's the 21st Century.

So you sit in a position of privilege wanting to force a standard on others that you wouldn't even be in America if that standard existed in the past?

Do you at least acknowledge the hypocrisy of such a position?

    "position of privilege" snort!

I don't acknowledge it as hypocrisy at all. What the economy needed 200 years ago is not what the economy needs now. Unless you are arguing that we should have open borders, we are going to have some criteria deciding who gets in and who doesn't. If you are offended by having people who can actually contribute to the economy, what is your criteria?

It's possible to both support controlled borders and to support lower costs to immigrate.

I see no reason any American would be upset at our country finally having some real immigration standards. No leftist I know blasts New Zealand, an they have strict standards. Are they racists?

    Absurd.

Immigration needs reform. There's only so much trash you can squeeze into a can before it spills all over the floor.

Oh now you don't understand, when Mexican illegals were working for peanuts and doing the work Americans wouldn't do they weren't a problem. When they started demanding better wages and living conditions now they are costing us too much they need to go.

Don't assume the worst in people. You make it sound like he's deliberately trying to cause these people pain for his own enjoyment.

Undocumented workers are to the minimum wage as "illicit cigarettes" are to sin taxes. They're simply the black market alternative to a state prohibition, in this case a price floor.

The state can prohibit action, it cannot prohibit demand.

The debate is about immigrants who speak English and have useful skills vs people who can't and don't. If given a choice between a skilled English speaker with skills and a person who can't speak English and has no skills, which person would be the better pick to come here?

That number was cited on the radio news several times yesterday when this story was being reported. I believe the original research was done by AP or Reuters.

Farms in Illinois and Indiana employ illegal migrant labor in rates sufficient to provide work for all the unemployed youths in Chicago ?

I can't do anything about what my grandparents did and didn't do, but they never accepted handouts, they left behind their old countries and earned their keep. They didn't try to turn Fort Lee, NJ into an Italian or Armenian village, instead they turned themselves into English speaking, hard working Americans and TRIED TO FIT INTO THE AMERICAN WAY OF LIFE.

I reject the either or premise of you question.

BTW I worked for 3 years at South 59th and Lowe in Chicago in the late 70's. A manager at a lite manufacturing plant. It was run out of there by the crime at a cost of 200 jobs.
