Back during the 1970's we were dependent on OPEC oil from the Middle East.

Not today but Japan, China, and Europe still are. Because of globalization and really stupid trade agreements that affects America.

The energy crisis of the 70's caused inflation in America that led to the Feds in 1980 to raise interest rates to bring inflation under control. Actually raising the interest rates caused the recession of 1980.

Think about it, double digit interest rates. Not even the rich would make a major purchase using credit. You either paid cash for a home, the car or washing machine or you didn't buy it. That's why the recessions of 80 and 81-82 were the worst recessions since the Great Depression. It affected every American from the poor to the rich.

 

My first home was 13%.

One thing for sure, it wasn't during the so called Great Recession or when the Feds kept the interest rates artificially low to prop up Obama's phony economy for almost eight years.

Donald Trump is taking the USA down the rabbit hole of debt and bankruptcy. The US$ is already declining against other currencies at the inception of Trump tenure.

 

Has nothing to do with the issue discussed. The policies of Volcker and Carter led to a sharp recession in the spring of 1980. When Carter left office the prime rate was 21.5%, a new record.

 

At least Reagan was able to actually show something for his spending.

 

So Clinton had to rescue the USA from declining real wages during Bozo Reagan's tenure? Of course, the GOP blamed the negative consequences of Reaganomics on Jimmy Carter because everybody knew Ronnie was demented.
