I'm more of an agnostic, personally. But to answer your question logical1, it's a need for peace of mind through a concept I like to call 'perspective purity'. Then of course, there is the fact that religious beliefs affect legislation. This is a problem when someone who doesn't follow a particular religion is bound by it's rules.
Lot's of atheists, like myself, meditate and it has nothing whatsoever to do with religion because no superstitious beliefs are involved. It has been scientifically proven that humans and animals can achieve a meditative state of mind. It was religions that nefariously co-opted it and tried to pretend that it was a means to contacting their deities.
The State / Government, Cannot sanction a Religion or Religious customs of any type. Yoga is a type of process, not a Religion. Yoga: definition: : a system of physical postures, breathing techniques, and sometimes meditation derived from Yoga but often practiced independently especially in Western cultures to promote physical and emotional well-being
Well, I lack belief in your statement that you lack belief. And in case you don't get that, I believe that you think you don't believe, I just think that there is more going on here than meets the eye, probably more political and less philosophical.
Nope, I said one thing and you argued against something else altogether. This is known as a straw man.
You will note that the VAST majority of ALL Atheist commentary comes about as reaction to Christian attacks or comments about Atheism....much like this one. We (at least me) could not care much less if you decided to ignore reality in favor of invisible man worship, but when you and your buddies ask for debate and comment stop complaining when you get it.
I went back and read through the thread again, all you did was make the same claims over and over again with no supporting evidence. That is not refutation, that is argument by repetition, a logical fallacy. You also changed the subject a couple of times.
I don't care that you pray to him. I don't get uptight about someone I don't believe in. I DO get upset when prayer is FORCED on everyone. I DO get upset when religion creeps sneakily and dishonestly into PUBLIC places. I DO get uptight when believers demand everyone should believe in their pet religion. I DO get uptight when those who believe in a god think this country should be a theocracy. "It just don't make sense".....no, it DOESN'T make sense to believe in something with no proof.
Care to explain why you made the post! Interesting how for some reason God believers have to keep fomenting discord and attacking unbelievers instead of just enjoying and being content in their special relationship with God. I will guess if you go back through the OP's on the Religion and Philosophy forum more than 90% will have been started by people who claim to be religious and just can't stop themself from promoting religion or attacking athiesm.
were you expecting reality to change because you don't like it? I quoted your statement directly, and then I refuted it.
I don't. I do care about mandatory participation and about passing laws that are based on religious supposition. I also care about governmental endorsement of one religion over others, which is the purpose of opposing posted 10 commandment plaques and in god we trust mottos.
not really. Your claim was completely moronic, and demonstrably false. Which is why it was so easy to refute.
