it's a rifle ideal for unnerving enemy troops. loud enough to get attention, not loud enough to get the attention of everyone within miles. that Tarentino flick with Brad Pitt killing Nazis-that was a harassment operation.
Then I imagine you are largely unaware of how the optics enhance the shooter to see small targets at London distances, and a person who would otherwise be unable to see a target may see it with aid magnification. A 25x scope helps quite a bit, but may I assume you have peered through such a magnificent telescope? You should atleast try it once.
That's silly. Military snipers are taught to mask or misdirect the sound of their shots. You never want to give away your position. There's no such thing as a "harassing" sniper rifle that's designed to draw attention....or at least not that I've ever heard of. It's a hell of a lot more unnerving to see your buddy take a shot to the chest and have no idea where the sniper is. Tarentino movies also aren't exactly evidence.
SOUND IS NOT REALLY A FACTOR WITH A HIGHLY SUPPRESSED .22LR , think Inflicting non-fatal injury = harrasment, I guess .
Sound simply is not a factor period on a suppressed .22. They are the easiest to suppress and the quietest caliber....
.... yeah. I am not sure how effective "harassment" fire would be anyway. Just suppress an M4 or M16. At least you can wound the target.
From what I can research is that the IDF (Israeli Defense Force) (not the British) use silenced 10/22s to shoot protestors in the legs. http://mondoweiss.net/2011/01/another-made-in-usa-“less-lethal”-weapon-kills-in-palestine.html
I much prefer the scout rifle concept. A lightweight rifle, no more than 7 pounds, with a scope and one minute of angle accuracy. I have two in .308 and can keep under 6 inch groups at 600 meters. Hmm, I can carry both mine and still be carrying less than you.
Sniping with a 22LR sounds dangerous to me, for the sniper. What's your chances getting that close, and getting away. Quantrill
Thanks for the link, that was hilarious. Pretty much was an anti-.50 caliber article. VPC is clueless. I wish they made accurate rifles, because I cant hit anything with mine. On Sunday I went out for bit before dark and shot at 6 inch steel plates from 100yds. I couldnt hit worth a darn with my AR-15/M4 (it was really windy, lol), I was much better with the Mini-14. Used the same ammo from the same box (.223 the cheap stuff). But I jest, Its all me, I just suck with rifles. They are scary. And some of them are black which makes them extra scary.
good post TomTeaPack ,,, speaking of Scout Rifles ,,, there's no doubt that the .308 packs a punch at long range , and I have one myself , but it's not a Scout rifle , it's a Sniper rifle , strictly long range . As a former Recon/Scout in the 101st ABN , , , and a psuedo-survivalist , if I had to pick a perfect Scout Rifle , I'd pick a well / rugged 4X scoped .22 Magnum rifle , clip fed and bolt action ... perfection achieved . a Scout eats what the land provides , and a man will see more squirrells & rabbits than he will see deer or bear ,,, but a .22 mag shot out to 125 yards is meat in the pot .. one shot ...littlebittypop ,,,, supper ... if you shoot a squirrell with a .308 , all you're gonna have left to eat is the tail ... yep , that .22Mag ,,, that's a scout rifle . and , I can carry plenty of ammo ,,, 500 rounds of .22Mag is easy on the shoulders to carry. It'd put a crick in a mules back to carry 500 rounds of .308 ... and , a Scouts main function is to sneaky peet around and not be seen ... and if you're engaging fire from .308 range , you most definately have announced your presence ... and you need to get your butt out of there . and a .22 Mag is a lot easier to run with than a .308 ...
There is no need for the type of weapons YOU own. No no no! ALL firearms should be legal, at least in the USA as per constitutional rights. As for you wolverine in your OP piece asking what the anti gun people would think about your firearm, IMO the anti gun nuts would despise your firearm. Most of them feel that gun control is the elimination of as many firearms and types of firearms that they can get away with. If I was forced to be a sniper I would choose a clip fed .50 BMG. Rev A
Great post Rev A ,,, as usual .. a .50 BMG is a fearsome weapon ,,, and we've both seen them in action ,,, I'd not want to take one on ,,, but I can sneaky peet around and get out of Dodge ,,, you prolly would do the same against a position so armed with such devastating firepower ,, but it's the ammo that is cost prohibitive .

@6Gunner, I just learned that the Secret Service snipers use bolt actions. Why the hell would they use them? In fact, why would any sniper use a slow ass bolt action?
More accurate, and a higher rate of fire is not typically necessary for law enforcement sniper work inside the US.
You are describing the IDF’s use of a scoped integral suppressed barrel10/22 used in a highly controversial role for supposed less than lethal suppression of Palestinian protestors where the IDF were supposedly instructed to aim for the lower extremities of rock throwing protestors. Became highly controversial because a number of protestors were killed by upper extremity shots. Some IDF commanders felt the gun was effective when protester fell from wounds from unseen/unheard shots. BTW, a suppressed .22 LR doesn’t completely silence a LR round if it is standard or higher velocity. These rounds are supersonic and will have the accompanying crack. There are subsonic LR rounds and if I am not mistaken, the IDF used one with a rubber coated steel FMJ bullet with a muzzle velocity in the neighborhood of 400fps. When my girls used to practice out back with their Anshultz rifles they used a round called a CB cap from CCI. Very low sound signature from the rifle, less than some air guns. They used to practice shooting aspirin at 25yrds.
Why was a seven year old thread even resurrected in the first place? Who had the bright idea to go about doing such? Which individual has a kitchen cabinet they are not keeping stocked with a full set of cups?
