Why do you not care about cows? Why is that an animal you ARE ok in harming? What have cows ever done to you??? : ) What is so wrong with having a rifle to use for long range target shooting or hunting? You realize cows are getting harmed in order for you to have a hamburger, right?
I suspect it’s not an either/or proposition or deployment doctrine any more that only carrying on type of pistol during active protective service. Also consider, up til now, what the threats have been; they aren’t, yet, multi unit coordinated attacks... unless you believe some of the conspiracy theorists on the Kennedy assisination.
I remember training (playing, more accurately) in the tank simulators at Fort Knox when I was in ROTC, being introduced to the targetting/tracking systems the 'new gen' were using. I figured it would be about 10 years before such was available on infantry weapons. Guess it was more like 20, but still... craziness.
Typical cultural-marxist revisionism. Rewriting history and telling lies to further a radical leftist political agenda. Carlos Hathcock didn't use a rifle chambered for the Browning .50 cal cartridge, Carlos used a Browning M-2 heavy machine gun. For 35 Years, The Longest Sniper Kill Was With a Ma-Duece While the current record for the longest “confirmed” sniper kill is over 2,700 yards (just over 1.5) miles, with a .338 Lapua Magnum round, for nearly 35 years the record stood not with a traditional centerfire rifle, but with a modified M2 Browning Heavy Machine Gun, affectionately known as the “Ma Duece” The “sniper?” None other than the famous US Marine Gunnery Sergeant Carlos Hathcock III. Using a 8x scope common for the era (a Unertl), Hathcock engaged the Vietcong from a stabilized tripod mounted M2. Per the book Inside the Crosshairs: Snipers in Veitnam, by Colonel Michael Lee Lannig stated that Hathcock engaged a moving target on a bicycle at over 2,500 yards, requiring two shots. Hathcock’s first round disabled the bicycle (blowing off the handlebars), the second struck the enemy soldier in the chest. The record stood for over 35 years including US missions in various low-intensity conflicts such as Somalia, Panama, etc., and larger wars including Desert Storm. It was finally broken in 2002 by a Canadian sniper using the same round, albeit this time in a purpose-built highly-accurate platform using likewise purpose-built ammunition. Gunnery Sergeant Hathcock is still a legend within and outside the Marine Corps. Post-Vietnam, Hathcock helped established the Marine Corp’s Scout Sniper school along with training the best of Tier 1 units including Navy SEALS, Army Delta, and others. https://www.thefirearmblog.com/blog...-the-longest-sniper-kill-was-with-a-ma-duece/
Pack out your kill on your back, eh? When I was in college many decades ago, I used to hunt, with permission, on land owned by a farmer friend of mine. One day when returning empty handed from deer hunting and traversing across his pastures, I noticed a number of his cows had the word ‘cow’ whitewashed across their sides. When I inquired out of extreme curiosity, he told me in angry tone, that he had been aware that his neighbor had allowed hunters from Chicago to hunt his property. My friend encountered two of his cows shot dead. He said, perhaps the Chicago fellows didn’t know the difference between deer and cows. I remarked, if they didn’t, it was unlikely they could read. I would guess the cows were shot just out of pure malevolence. I have retold that story a number of times and many have doubted its veracity, but then recently, I found this story... https://www.belfasttelegraph.co.uk/...pony-dead-thinking-it-was-a-fox-37403047.html Like the identification silhouettes that were provided in WWII, maybe some should be provided to urbanites that venture to the country to hunt 4 legged things.
http://www.vpc.org/graphics/snipcov2.pdf This reads like it was written by an ADHD 12-year old after a non-stop weekend of Call of Duty and Red Bull.
I'm from Chicago, and 4 of us used to go to farms around Plainfield Ill, to hunt Pheasants and rabbits. We just used shotguns though, and it was 2 adults, My dad was one, and two teenagers, I was 14. I remember that story, this was the 60's.
If I am not mistaken, he most used a Winchester M70 in .30-06. Largely, because of an article I read on him back in the late 70’s, I acquired. a M70 in .300 WMG. I don’t remember the scope I used, but I do remember the gun’s accuracy. Shot it a lot, but during that time I was building and hunting with black powder rifles so I never used it to hunt with eventually trading it and cash for a Browning BAR II Safari in .300 WMG. His story serves to remind, it’s not the gun, but the mind, skill, and the ability to innovate and adapt to fit the task of and by the shooter. Amazing fellow.
I use to go deer hunting on Fort Hunter Liggett, an Army installation. The Army leases out some of the land for cattle grazing. It never fails on opening day of the deer season someone always shoots a cow.
Not the 60’s, 1974, Fulton County, Illinois, not far from WIU in Macomb. It’s possible he got the idea elsewhere and others may have subsequently done it as well. I know some farmers in the North of Ireland, subsequent to the story I posted above have taken to painting ID’s on livestock (a many decades old thing on roaming sheep). BTW, I don’t believe anyone mistakes a cow for a deer.
Nah... an firearm ignorant Anti with an agenda doing copy and paste for a rant. I note how many thousands of people have been killed in the US by ‘sniper’ weapons and all the vehicles destroyed by .50bmg. I doubt many anti gun advocates have any clue how much .50 bmg rifles and the ammo costs or the level of skill required to make long distance shots. How many criminals or even crazies would invest the money or time to justify any concern?
They want to make it as hard as they can for the law abiding to exercise their right to arms - nothing else matters.
Now for all you people who want to cow hunt, this can be a reality. I used to live in Alaska. During ww2 they brought a few thousand military personal there, they had to feed them. So they imported cows from the lower 48 and put them on islands scattered around where they were needed. They would breed, and Then the military could go out and shoot them as needed. After the war they packed up and went home, leaving thousands of cows to breed on the islands. I encountered some on long island, just outside of Kodiak, and they are ornery. But if you contact fin and feather in Alaska, they will tell you what islands are open for cow. Just don't waste any, Wanton waste in Alaska will get you jail time.
I own a Winchester pre-64 Mod. 70 chambered for the Winchester .270. It was the first sniper rifle used by LAPD SWATT. The pre-64 Mod 70's have a Mauser action. Later Mod 70's don't have a Mauser action. Eventually Marine snipers in Vietnam switched over to the Remington 700 chambered for the Winchester .308 (7.62X51) Two reasons. Winchester Mod 70's after 1963 no longer used the Mauser action. Logistics, 7.62X51 ammunition was easier to come by than 30-06. Pre-64 Mod 70's were never chambered for the Winchester 308's. The Remington 700 actions were good actions almost but not quite as good as the Mauser action.
It's a double-edged sword. Urban environment means lots of potential for tertiary casualties, innocent bystanders, etc; so extreme precision is a must. But, an urban environment also means relatively limited range and you get into where a semi-auto rifle like the Stoner SR25 SASS (Semi-Auto Sniper System) becomes more viable. You'll also note that Presidential security is in layers; the agents closest to the President are equipped generally with subguns and CQB weapons. Next layer out is equipped differently, and so on. A sniper with a bolt gun would generally be on overwatch as opposed to close in with the President's primary detail.
It’s a bit more than that as I and Turtledude have often suggested. It is a tactic of the Democratic Party that aligns itself as anti gun. Of all the distinctions between parties, the anti gun position provides one of the best means to vilify, distort, and galvanize followers against the GOP. More in the GOP own guns than among Democrats and are more likely to show at the polls. It is far easier to identify them, harass them, and vilianize them using gun rights opposition than issues like the economy, abortion, spending, etc. and to equate them as right wing racist fanatics, Joe-Bob, child killing, religious fanatics because of the image they create to subconsciously link them with violence. Power is the objective, social control a goal, and how better than attack Constitutionally protected individual rights that hedge against their power than attack the centerpiece right that is revered by conservatives while gaining consensus on eliminating other rights because to disarm their political opposition would mean they would get defacto concensus on violating the 1st, 4th, 5th, 9th and 10th amendments to effect such disarmament. Despite the claims of the useful, well meaning among them, it’s, not about saving lives, but power now matter how many lives are sacrificed.
The pre-64s were excellent platforms. I have seen them, Mausers too, used for a lot of high pressure cartridge experiments. I have a Weatherby MKV ..338 win mag with Accumark that has amazing accuracy, and impressive bolt system. Never got the chance to hunt with it, at least not yet. It’s kept in AK with a friend. But, no optic, I used the scope elsewhere.
Hmmm... new info. Am up there every year but usually for fishing. I always consume what I harvest and can’t justify harvesting the game and shipping it to me. But, I am a fan of AK’s game laws and they will investigate abandoned kills almost as if they were murders of humans. But, AK also has gun laws that would make anti gun advocates crazy.
