Before we begin, I must make clear that I support LGBT rights 100% and I hold no specific view that homosexuality is somehow a disease. This is important to note with what I'm about to discuss. With that disclaimer, let me tell you my problem I have with gay men: cruising. This is a term used for the practice of gay men who like to go to public bathrooms and expose themselves to strangers while propositioning gay sex. I speak of this subject because I once entered a public bathroom in Germany which was empty when I came in and I noticed a glory hole in the bathroom stall. I'm 100% certain that if the sexes were not segregated, some straight people would do the exact same thing. I realize some on this forum are not entirely supportive of gay rights and I'll let them speak for themselves, but they are in fact the main reason this practice exists. Since these gay men are closeted out of fear of societal consequences and judgement and cannot pursue healthy same sex relationships, they resort to things like this. With that said, until society is 100% accepting of the gay community, it is completely inexcusable for gay men to expose themselves to strangers. I have absolutely no problem with gay men hitting on me to which I would politely tell them "That's not how I swing" If on the other hand, they expose themselves to me in a public bathroom, I would absolutely be in the right to assault the person doing it. Or I could also run out and tell everyone in the street or building (shouting) while pointing my finger to look out for that pervert. IF my liberal/progressive friends believe I am in the wrong on this, tell me what you would do in such a situation. Would you maintain your composure and propose he gets professional help? I would find that very difficult in the heat of the moment.
Anyone sticking their wang dang in a random bathroom is not very smart. I usually carry a lighter, I would give him some hot "action" all right!
I don't really think violence is a justified response to someone exposing themself to you. Get a grip.
I’m going to break a rule and make some assumptions here. In addition to objecting to gay men exposing themselves in public, you’d object to straight men exposing themselves in public (which we all know happens, albeit in some different circumstances). You’ve also no issue with gay men who don’t expose themselves in public (and I’m sure that is very much the majority). With that in mind, would you maybe reconsider the focus of your title? As a secondary point of thought, would you object as strongly if it was a woman exposing herself in public, especially one you found attractive? How much of your reaction is down to the fundamental wrongness of the behaviour and how much down to your personal visceral reaction? I’m not saying your argument is wrong in itself, it’s just interesting how we respond to and prioritise things.
It happened to me when I used a public loo on one of my walks; it made me literally feel sick. Thereafter I had to 'reconnoitre', and if they were in the men's loo I'd go into the adjacent women's one. WTF!
Your assumptions are correct. Should I shorten the title to just "Cruising"? If you could tell me how to edit thread titles I'll promptly do so. As to an attractive woman exposing herself, I will confess that I'd just be a bystander. Not wanting to look foolish, I would take several steps back and do nothing. Then I'd let the proper authorities take care of the situation. This is of course if it were outside the bathroom. If an attractive woman did it inside the bathroom, I would dread it happening, but my weaknesses would overwhelm me. It's extremely unlikely to happen however, therefore I don't lose sleep over it. So to answer your question, it's unfortunate that it would come down to my knee jerk reaction. BUT the wrongness of the act would still be noted in my head.
Just as with a crazy nut job holding a "the end is near" sign and preaching on a corner, this extremely rare and disturbing situation is best dealt with by getting far away and shaking your head.
I was going for more of a “Go and think about what you’ve done” kind of thing to be honest. You can’t change the past but you can choose to act differently in the future (which would be my advice to anyone exposing themselves to strangers too).
If this practice is not widespread, why did it take undercover police officers to catch politician Larry Craig and the late singer George Michael doing it?
Likely this thread is the result of the OP imaging an exposed penis in the bathroom and has nothing to do with gay men exposing themselves. Perhaps some level of disappointment of an empty glory hole?
Some people find this type of behavior disturbing. And I suppose....based on what I'm reading from your posts....Some don't. Years ago when my kids were young, and we were at the library, I was chastised by the the librarian for allowing my 10 year son go into the men's bathroom by himself. Apparently they had an ongoing problem at the time.
Can you imagine the general outrage had this thread been, "I'm not a racist...but".... How about this then, perhaps the OP now understands what it means to be a woman in most parts of the world.... Clearly, this is shocking to them, and offensive to them. The irony....
Yes, such an experience would help men understand what women go through all the time. It does not change the fact that this specific problem exists as well as sexual harassment of women. Lumping them together as one problem however is in my opinion not the best way to solve both.
Well, there you go, your second opinion in the same thread. Brava.... Sometimes, it's instructive to look deeply into a mirror. Perhaps this might help....
We used to say never stick it in a glory hole -- somebody might hook it up to the low pressure end of some kind of mechanical contraption -- or worse.
Sounds more like the type of behavior that takes place in a college football locker room or in the Marine corps.
I do find it disturbing as I would hope everyone would. I do not however feel the need to make a thread on it any more than any other extremely rare situation. I had a guy hit on me once and just said "Sorry, Not Interested".
It's not rare. I don't know why you say it is. It happens in nearly every city and cops are on the look out for that type of thing. It's in the papers. It happens in bathrooms in heavily populated areas. It's a small segement of gay people that get excited about this type of thing. Just like straight people that hook up with strangers for the excitement.
If you're accepting of homosexuality as an orientation, then why be appalled that they're known for promiscuity and high STD rates?
I take strong issue with that. I pointed out my one criticism I have with them. If you point out the AIDS epidemic in the 1980s, that's not due to homosexuality. It's due to promiscuity of which straight people are guilty in equal measure at the time combined with a lack of knowledge of the disease and lack of education of safe sex.
Most AIDS deaths continue to be MSMs. The large portion of AIDS in the US has always been due to homosexual activity. "Equal measure" my behind. https://www.cdc.gov/msmhealth/STD.htm https://www.hiv.gov/hiv-basics/overview/data-and-trends/statistics
