Trump says he's not 'personally bothered' by North Korea missile tests
    https://www.cnn.com/2019/05/26/politics/trump-japan-visit/index.html

Tokyo (CNN)President Donald Trump refused to back away from his positive assessment of North Korea on Monday, saying he wasn't "personally bothered" by the regime's recent short-range missile tests despite the contradictory views of his Japanese hosts and his own national security adviser.

It was a notable break in the aggressive display of camaraderie that Prime Minister Shinzo Abe orchestrated for Trump during his state visit in Tokyo, which began with golf and a sumo tournament and continued Monday with a formal visit to Japan's new Emperor and empress.
The show of unity was meant to solidify the US-Japan alliance -- and at a press conference Monday, Abe insisted he and Trump were exactly aligned on the threat from Pyongyang.

"Kim Jong Un made a statement that Joe Biden is a low IQ individual. He probably is, based on his record. I think I agree with him on that," Trump said, another startling example of the US President siding with the violent authoritarian and swiping at his political rivals -- this time on foreign soil.
    ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
    (mine)
Trump was extremely angry when N. Korea shot off a few missiles less than two years ago calling Kim Jong Un, 'little rocket man' and threatened 'fire and fury' on N. Korea. Now Trump is in Japan, the country who had a N. Korean missile fly right over it two years ago, the country where there are 50,000 U.S. military personnel stationed, along with approximately 40,000 dependents of military personnel and another 5,500 American civilians employed there by the United States Department of Defense. But now, suddenly he's not 'bothered' by it and disagrees with John Bolton who claims that this is a violation of UN resolutions.

But he agreed with Kim Jong Un that Joe Biden was a 'low IQ individual". Why do people refuse to see that Trump doesn't care for anyone but himself? Think about this......what if it was IRAN that fired off a few missiles within range of where he was standing yesterday? Would he say that he wasn't concerned about that?

This is a very mentally sick man you elected.

Trump is currently negotiating with NK so there will be a lot of back and forths, this is how these things work.

Trump isn't in negotiations with Iran so that is completely different.

North Korea's actions violated a UN resolution. Where is the UN on this?

Why don't you ask US National Security Advisor John Bolton?

[snip]Bolton told reporters in Tokyo on Saturday that there was “no doubt” that North Korea’s recent launches violated U.N. resolutions, and that sanctions against the North must be kept in place. Trump later downplayed the missile tests, tweeting, “North Korea fired off some small weapons, which disturbed some of my people, and others, but not me.”[/snip]

The media should be asking the UN security council. Why make this about the US only? It was the UN's resolution.

Any so-called 'negotiations' that Trump has done with Kim Jong Un has only benefited N. Korea. For one thing, Trump is the first US president in history to official recognize Kim's regime. Neither his father or grandfather were able to accomplish that. Trump gave the N. Korea propaganda machine a whole lot to celebrate. Their first summit failed to get an agreement from N. Korea to halt their nuclear missile proliferation. In January 2018, Kim Jong Un made a speech in which he claimed that the US is now within striking distance of their missiles. Yes, N. Korea released a comatose Otto Warmbier who died days later, but then sent the US a $2 million medical bill for his care. Yes, N. Korea shipped 55 boxes of "US military remains" but only two have been identified so far. The rest of the boxes may contain more than one human remains or they may contain the remains of animal bones.

This past March, at their second meeting, Trump came back empty handed. He said he would be "disappointed in Kim Jong Ung if N. Korea is rebuilding their launch sites" --- which they are. Trump came back without any sort of deal and the N. Koreans told Trump to send someone other than Mike Pompeo the next time because they claimed he was a 'gangster'.

So where are we exactly with N. Korea? We're right where we began. The only difference is that Kim Jong Un has more support of his people than he ever had because he worked Trump like a puppet master.

You really shouldn't get too deep into the weeds as to whether this was a short or intermediate range missile. The fact is that Kim Jong Un had warned the US In recent weeks saying he would give the United States until the end of the year to come up with concrete proposals that would lift sanctions on the North — an implicit warning that, after that deadline, it might resume the nuclear and intercontinental missile testing that had appeared, in the summer of 2017, to be leading to conflict.

The second thing to keep in mind is that Trump sided politically with Kim Jong Un, our adversary, to bash Joe Biden. The US used to have a policy that "politics stops at the water's edge". You can figure that one out I'm sure.

I'm sure conservatives would have been just fine with Obama not taking N. Korean missile tests seriously. Those silly North Koreans!

North Korea gained plenty. First of all they gained worldwide acknowledgement from a sitting US President. Kim Jong Un, as his father and grandfather before him, was desperate for international recognition. Kim Jong Un is the leader of a tiny, deeply impoverished country. He’s a brutal dictator who starves and imprisons his own citizens. And he just got the president of the United States to fly halfway around the world to meet, shake his hand, and cancel military exercises with his greatest enemy — all without giving up anything major in return.

That’s a huge win. North Korea’s leaders have long wanted to be seen as major players on the world stage and to be accorded the respect and legitimacy given to nuclear powers. And they’ve long viewed a one-on-one meeting with the president of the United States as a key way to attain that status. Trump gave that to them on a silver platter. Former presidents from Bill Clinton to George W. Bush to Barack Obama, have all refused to meet face to face with North Korea’s leaders (either Kim Jong Un or his father, Kim Jong Il, for just that reason. Kim Jong Un banged his spoon on the table loud enough and Trump fell for it.

North Korea didn't make a single major concession to the United States. Their summit was considerably weaker, in fact, than what previous presidents had gotten during multilateral negotiations with the North Koreans. So Kim gave up nothing and got both a propaganda win and a pledge from the US to suspend military exercises with South Korea. It’s was an incredible diplomatic coup.

NK is a sovereign country. It has every right to test missiles. Why should Trump or anyone else be worried?

You should make up your mind whose side you're on because you sure as HELL don't sound like an American citizen. Either that, or you're just too young and ignorant of facts to give a crap.

I am a true American Citizen, and I am neither ignorant or young. It is you who do not sound like a American Citizen. American Citizens understand soverignty and the rights of others. You cannot claim rights for yourself unless you recognise those same rights for others.

If you don't understand that the one single goal of N. Korea is to bomb the **** out of the US or Japan until we're all dead. THAT is why you are ignorant because you don't know that fact. And NO, they should NEVER be allowed to develop missiles that can carry nuclear warheads. Period.

This is just one example of the type of propaganda N. Korean's get daily. "Americans starving and eating snow while the dead bodies of others lie next to them in blue body bags".

Of course Trump doesn't care... Jong Un is dropping his missiles in the Sea of Japan... would be a different matter if he shot them in Trumps direction

IMO, in addition to testing missiles, N. Korea is testing Trump. Trump has essentially said these tests are fine. After all, what can he do? If he were to return to his "fire and fury" rhetoric, he will be admitting his efforts have gotten nowhere. He's not going to start a war - he's a non-interventionist - he's smart enough to know a war would be unpopular.
