I'm glad you have this position because I agree with you: Laws can be made to be unlawful. Slavery was made to be rightly illegal, eugenics/racial cullings is a war crime and a crime against humanity. They might have been "breaking" the edicts of those who tried to enforce those things, but they were living within the law of humanity, the law of freedom and good will.

Theirs was an act of bravery in defiance of those who mistreated them in the color of law. Being told you're being arrested for a crime on the other hand and knowing there are civil ways to gain your freedoms back is different.

I just watched it. That is cold blooded murder. That cop knew exactly what he was doing. You can see it on his face that he is concentrating on shutting this man's airway and blood flow down. It's sickening, and I hope he gets life without parole in general population as someone's punk.

Agreed. His initial use of force might well have been justified. At the least, I'm prepared to stipulate for the discussion here that there was no problem with it. The real issue is that he continued using force on an unconscious man long after any resistance had ceased.

Sounds like he physically resisted arrest, the witnesses there admonish him because he refused to be put in the car. So seems the physical take down was necessary, they did so but once they had him cuffed and on his stomach I don't get the officer remaining with his knee on the guys neck especially with his obvious distress. Look at the beginning he's not back on his heals he's almost straight over his knees, max weight.

Ok, but the guy is dead, that issue is moot.

I don't know you keep bringing up an issue that is at best ancillary to this thread. Create a thread for your issue.

My apologies. I thought we were discussing abuse of power by law enforcement.

Once the arrest was made, that's when they should have gotten off of him and put him in the car. Furthermore, that is NOT a restraining position. You're taught to restrain to avoid injury to yourself AND to the other person, not to knee him in his ****ing bagpipes. This is manifestly murder, premeditated murder of the first degree.

We were, but other people not wanting others to have guns has nothing to do with the abuse of power by LE. If you think so, sorry, but you will have to be more socratic in your explaination.

The four officers have been fired. The mayor said this

""The technique that was used is not permitted; is not a technique that our officers get trained in on," he said. "And our chief has been very clear on that piece. There is no reason to apply that kind of pressure with a knee to someone's neck.""
    https://www.cnn.com/2020/05/26/us/minneapolis-police-encounter-death-trnd/index.html

As I noted elsewhere it was not just a slip during a struggle and just for a few seconds. It was a concerted effort to apply that pressure to his neck using his full weight. He'll have to justify it. I don't see where he can with what we know.

My reply was to those wanting cops to be the only ones that carry guns. They went silent.

He could breathe "in that moment in time." You know what sickens me? Apparently the law enforcement community would like the excuse that it's okay to take excessive measures, maybe even take someone's life because their job is just so damned difficult.(To me, this case reminds me of the Tamir Rice case, where a dispatcher forgot to tell that the kid had a TOY gun and a 12 year old child unfortunately died.)

I understand that the LEO's job is difficult, and I even understand that mistakes are made but there's a difference from a spontanteous situation, to sitting on someone's neck/head for several minutes. If it's too difficult for the law enforcement community to take suspects into custody so they can face justice, then they should resign.

The officer wearing a badge is no different from a citizen, the laws apply to him all the same. No ONE is above the law! Murder, capital one murder. When the officer bragged him to "get up" while kneeing him, it's clear that he was enjoying his act of violence. Premeditated murder in my view.

With respect, the mayor doesn't know dick about what is and what isn't taught in the academy.

Capital one murder normally isn't, and if it is then criminal justice reform is once again a top priority. I don't support our Nazi SS masquerading as law enforcement officers. The job is to serve and protect, not search and destroy.

They are, in droves. Across every major city in this country.

That attitude has worked wonders in Baltimore, where crime is sky high and the police force is short several hundred officers. They were above 3,000 in 2012, now they're down to around 2,300.

And then those same people complaining about police practices will be rioting because police aren't doing their job cleaning up the streets.

That's why they can't hire officers. No matter what an officer does, they're wrong. Nobody is willing to deal with armchair scrutiny for $18/hr.

Its already underway. Departments across the country can't hire new recruits faster than the old ones say "**** this".

Were going to get reform all right, but I dont think people will like it.

Being terminated, all four officers lose the protection of the Thin Blue Line.

I predict Federal charges coming down the line post haste.

I will love it, no one is above the law. And the idea that law enforcement ever saw itself above the law was a huge mistake.

    Remember history with Casey Anthony?
Overcharging a suspect can lead to full acquittal.
Murder generally requires premeditation and planning in advance.
I, personally, hope the charges will be murder with possibility to convict with aggravated manslaughter. That way the cop will definitely do some time. And, hopefully, every cop that was standing there and watching this without helping the suspect.

    Edited to add word “aggravated”.

I do remember that, and we can have that as a backdrop, but to me the premeditation is shown in that he's laying there on the dude's neck, he tells him he can't breathe and there isn't a SINGLE thing done for the suspect. Hell, the suspect stopped moving and talking and he's STILL on his neck.

It's a very barbaric and brutal scene of murder.

Unfortunately that isn't true. The unions will fight to protect their pensions and benefits even following conviction.

I watched this. The title of this thread is incorrect. Black man dies during video showing officer kneeling on neck. Ambulance shows up and they don't even begin CPR? They pick his limp dead body up and onto the stretcher and load him up. It's a 10 minute video showing the knee to the throat of a man prone on the pavement for the duration of the video. A hold like that is fatal after about 3 minutes. The victim is unresponsive at about 3:30. He's just about certainly dead at 7:00.
