I believe it’s foolish to attempt natural herd immunity if vaccines are going to be an imminent reality. It looks hopeful, but as of yet we are not sure vaccination will lead to herd immunity either. I think we are all out of our squash if we go all in on any approach to herd immunity based on incorrect or incomplete information. Are some herd immunity advocates nuts? Sure. But so are some who oppose the idea of natural herd immunity. Both sides have provided misinformation and withheld information in their advocacy campaigns. Personally I am trying to remain pragmatic and follow the science where it leads.

If you are interested, we are now learning there is a memory B cell response from C19. It seems to vary by individual but a few months ago we didn’t know it existed at all. This immune response to infection is perhaps the best predictor of long lasting immunity we can observe today. Here is a link to a preprint of a study showing B cell immunity does result in many individuals. It’s good news. Especially since it’s pretty well determined SARS1 did not induce this type of immune response.

We are seeing both herd immunity and viral attenuation (Muller's ratchet) in Sweden which did not close down but initially did not protect the vulnerable elderly in nursing homes. 99% of their fatalities have been over the age of 50.

The dust has settled in Sweden. The pandemic is over. In Europe which locked down hard daily fatalities are trending up although well below the maximums from a few months ago. Look at Spain and France.
