New military strike in Kharkiv hits apartment complex near hospital, videos show

From CNN's Gianluca Mezzofiore, Katie Polglase and Paul P. Murphy

A new military strike in Kharkiv, Ukraine, has hit an apartment complex near a hospital, according to videos that have been geolocated and verified by CNN.

The explosion near the hospital comes hours after a military strike caused significant damage to Kharkiv's regional administration building.

In one video, a fire rages at a clearly damaged apartment complex, located just across the street from the hospital.

"The building is gone," someone in the video says.
In another video, which is an edited series of separate videos outside the apartment complex combined, at least two bodies are seen on the ground in the area surrounding the apartment buidling.

"The animals, simply animals," someone said, appearing to refer to those responsible for the military strikes.

"A house," another person said. "Look at what they've done."

A number of people are seen walking away from the apartment complex in the video.

"People are carrying out their suitcases," a voice says in the video.

The massive popular resistance to this war of conquest has surprised me.
I had assumed the Russian people to be more passive and submissive to central power. Russia may finally be ready to try Power to the People - for real.

YouTube joins Facebook, TikTok in banning Russian state media in Europe, impeding Russia’s ability to influence public on Ukraine

The moves by YouTube and other major social media companies come after mounting pressure from the European Commission, the Ukrainian government, some U.S. politicians and the companies’ employees. It could provoke retaliation by Russia.

I think so too. Few things anger people more than finding out they've been lied to by someone they trust to represent them and their interests. Then there are the shock the Russians have just received from their country even invading Ukraine to begin with and the absolute atrocities now occurring there in their name.

Putin's greatest supporters will probably be the most fierce when they turn on him.

It's my greatest fear for Ukraine and its people. Stalin and the Soviets tried to wipe out the Ukrainians during the Holodomor and Putin's rhetoric about how that country doesn't have a right to exist as an independent nation rings genocidal in my ears. Combine that with his disregard for human life and his past willingness to destroy cities (ex. Grozny) and the prospect is frighteningly real.

It seems he lives in an imaginary nostalgic world that is similar in some respects to the ones that other mass murderers have lived in. This article breaks down some of the comments he's made and it might give you a glimpse into what "reality" he is living in:

    Putin’s Dangerous Ukraine Narrative
    https://www.project-syndicate.org/c...ce-could-lead-to-war-by-anders-aslund-2021-07

To call it a 'dangerous narrative' is an understatement in the extreme.

I see that rotten bastard now wants to claim that Ukraine was trying to get nuclear weapons as an excuse for this war.

This is an impossible war to win for Putin. He greatly underestimated the world's response and over-estimated the adoration of Ukraine for him. Russia is spending $20 billion per day and cannot withstand these sanctions for very long. Even if Ukraine falls, in insurgency will cause havoc for years or decades. The west will be supplying insurgents with military grade weapons that will make Afghanistan look like a picnic. Putin is screwed.

Indeed, which only leaves the questions of how much longer this will go on and how many more will die.

I think his cronies are potentially the most dangerous of all.

If the cost of supporting Putin and his revanchist adventures gets too high they might decide to cut their losses, i.e., his throat.

Have you seen the images of the massive Russian military convoy creeping toward Kyiv? Looks more like human sacrifice.

Why would any leader place so much of his military in such vulnerable position?

The "Highway of Death" was just 3 miles long and only killed a few hundred soldiers and about 1500 vehicles.
The convoy in Ukraine is apparently jammed into a 40 mile stretch. Does this make any sense given the nature of modern warfare?

Russia cannot withstand the sanctions for too long. They won't even open up the stock market which means domestic companies cannot raise any money. big corporations are fleeing and cutting any association with them. Invasion is one thing. Occupation is another...and the citizens do not want him there.

International Court of Justice will hold public hearings next week over accusations of genocide in Ukraine

From CNN's Melissa Gray and Samantha Beech

The International Court of Justice (ICJ) in the Hague will hold public hearings starting Monday next week over claims of genocide in Ukraine.

In a statement Tuesday, the ICJ said public hearings will be held next Monday and Tuesday regarding “the case concerning Allegations of Genocide under the Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide (Ukraine v. Russian Federation).”

In its application to institute proceedings against Russia, Ukraine said Russia has “falsely claimed that acts of genocide have occurred” in the separatist regions of Luhansk and Donetsk, adding Russia then subsequently declared and implemented a “special military operation” against Ukraine, according to an earlier ICJ news release.

Ukraine denied these claims in its application and accused Russia of “planning acts of genocide" in the country, according to the news release.

The hearings will be held at the Peace Palace in The Hague, the seat of the Court, and will be devoted to Ukraine’s request for the indication of provisional measures, the statement said.

In a separate statement Tuesday, the ICJ said the President of the International Court of Justice, Judge Joan E. Donoghue, has sent “an urgent communication” to the Minister for Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation.

The communication said, “I have the honour to refer to the Request for the indication of provisional measures filed in the proceedings instituted by Ukraine against the Russian Federation on 26 February 2022. Acting in conformity with Article 74, paragraph 4, of the Rules of Court, I hereby call the attention of the Russian Federation to the need to act in such a way as will enable any order the Court may make on the request for provisional measures to have its appropriate effects.”

The ICJ said Tuesday that in view of the Covid-19 pandemic, the hearings next week will be held in a hybrid format. It said some Members of the Court will attend the oral proceedings in person in the Great Hall of Justice while others will participate remotely by video link.

Putin can't keep spending $20 billion a day.

If he's serious about conquering Ukraine he's going to have to start dropping the hammer in a BIG way within the next few days.

Indeed, there is still hope that at the end of the day Putin will not be welcome in the streets of Moscow, at least alive.

They may think there is a way to avoid that much slaughter, or they may not have the kinds of weapons systems they need.
I assume their air force has been neutralized.

I'm hoping they have some kind of op planned to hit it before it can all deploy. Maybe they're being patient since it isn't advancing too quickly and is apparently having supply problems.

Lets face it, the capital is just a symbol and if one looks at the map, Russia has next to nothing captured of this huge country.
It is getting bogged down left and right.
The longer the war lasts the more equipment will just break down. Already around 50% need a wrench.
The war of attrition is done on the road, not in combat.
Quality of equipment and quality of the draftees will be Russia's greatest problem and they are just 200 miles into this country.
Then add the cost, plus the sanctions, this is a no win situation for Russia.
On top of it, the whole world can now watch and judge the Mighty Russian Army.
It is not very impressive, so to speak.

But what would be a half arse face saving move for Putin out of this situation

Yepp, that's the sticking point, right there. Putin will ultimately fail, but in the meantime he could practically destroy Ukraine and not feel a bit of shame for what he did.
