This answer or comment wasn't meant for me but I just had to but in here. The Ukrainian government handing out weapons to civilians at this point is too little, too late. More likely they'll shoot each other rather than Russians. People have to be trained on handling weapons. And that can't really be done on the fly. Finland and Switzerland have a large segment of the population trained with firearms. You can start a program to train up people as some sort of militia, but once the war starts, it's too late.

So for Ukraine, it's too late.

 

Well where does it go? Do we have to defend Ukbek or Kazakhstan? Azerbaijan? Do we have to fortify and defend every former republic of the USSR?

 

Ukraine plus NATO plus Russia plus nukes equals a world war.

 

Baltic states are former USSR countries. Putin does not hide his aspiration to restore empire, which would also include Poland. Those are NATO countries. Ignoring Putins past statements is just willing ignorance at this point!

 

I'm not. I just want Russia out of Ukraine. Whether that means a world war is a different question and is up to the Russians and a lot of others. I don't subscribe to the notion that helping the Ukrainians defend their sovereign territory automatically means world war.

 

I wouldn't dare speak for Fatback, but for me, I see a world moving from COVID hysteria directly to War hysteria. I fully expect to hear soon that Russians are bayonetting Ukrainian babies or tossing them out of incubators. I see no counting the costs or understanding the implications of ridiculous war hungry statements. After the US just suffering a major military defeat only a few months ago, I don't see any accountability as to whether we could pull off this sort of military mission. It's very much like twitter is deciding if we go to war or not based on the next hysterical outrage.

Unless your willing to volunteer to join the international forces or enlist in your own nation's armed services, just poor out some vodka, call it freedom vodka, and stop trying to ignite world war three.

 

The idea that Putin plans on reconstituting the former borders of the USSR is a lie.
What that lie does is demonize Putin which is the main goal of the liars.

 

Baltic states are in NATO as is Poland. You seem to want us to defend non NATO countries. So should we defend all of the former Soviet Republics or just Ukraine?

"Helping the Ukrainians defend their sovereign territory" is fairly broad. If you want to send money to help out charities that's one thing, but if you want military involvement from any NATO country you are absolutely risking world war..

We all would like Russia out of Ukraine, but I don't believe the Ukrainians can beat the Russians militarily, and I think, all things being equal, Putin will win this. The only way you're going to get Putin out of Ukraine is to negotiate with him; a suggestion that I've discovered is very unpopular on this forum.

I will agree that training is a huge plus when dealing with weapons but history is littered with examples of the common people conscripted at times of war. From the medieval farmers and peasants to revolutions to citizens in the world wars many people are equipped with weapons they do not how to properly use and told to fight.

Putin's past and current actions and statements support the idea that he is attempting to capture territory that was lost, from his perspective, when the USSR broke up.

 

Well, the 2 break away provinces in the east of Ukraine voted to not become a member of Ukraine. Fourteen thousand in the two provinces were bombed, starved and killed for their dissonance by the Ukranian thugs since 2014.

Well he's Ukrainian, so he's not concerned with risks to the US or the world. Just like Zelenskyy, who is still wanting NATO to establish a no fly zone. From his perspective, if that starts WWlll, it's worth the risk to save his country.

Well we agree there. That is why we should try to avoid war whenever possible. There are many example throughout history where rag tag civilian forces have defeated better trained, equipped and organized militaries. Especially when they are defending their homes from invaders.
