you are right-all the ban did was to make Colt et al change their firearms slightly and the cost of normal capacity magazines increased a bit but dealers were able to get around that-at least for things like Glocks, ARs and some other popular weapons by giving police departments brand new "Law enforcement only" (which should be unconstitutional-anything police have civilians should be able to have) magazines in trade for pre 1994 magazines that the dealers could legally sell to private citizens. Lots of active duty military managed to get their hands on scrapped M16 mags as well. I was given a bag of M16 mags that were missing the anodization and thus were going to be scrapped

There are plenty of countries with much higher violent crime rates than ours, and secondly, we already have an example from our recent history in which more prisons and longer sentences did in fact reduce crime. So I'm puzzled why this resistance to something that we know works because it has not that long ago.
