DeSantis says Pence "did his duty" certifying 2020 results: "I have no beef with him"

    From CNN's Elise Hammond

After not directly answering a question about whether former Vice President Mike Pence did the right thing by certifying the results of the 2020 election, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis argued that Republicans should move on from the issue.

"Mike did his duty, I have no beef with him," DeSantis said. "Is this what we're going to be focusing on going forward? The rehashing of this?"

All but 1 presidential candidate indicated support for Trump as the GOP nominee even if he's convicted

    From CNN's Maureen Chowdhury

Asa Hutchinson keeps his hand down as the rest of the Republican presidential candidates indicate that they would support former President Donald Trump if he became the party's nominee. The Fox News Channel

All but one Republican presidential candidate on the debate stage indicated that they would support former President Donald Trump if he became the party's nominee — even if he were to be convicted in a court of law.

"You all signed a pledge to support the eventual Republican nominee. If former president Trump is convicted in a court of law, would you still support him as your party's choice? Please raise your hand if you would," moderator Brett Baier asked.

Vivek Ramaswamy, Ron DeSantis, Nikki Haley, Tim Scott, Mike Pence, Doug Burgum and Chris Christie all raised their hands. Former Arkansas Gov. Asa Hutchinson did not.'

Seems to me that republicans have embraced authoritarianism. I think political parties and government in general have an authoritarian streak, but it seems to me that republicans are currently embracing it. In republicans defense I think the left is embracing their own authoritarian impulses. The evidence I base this assessment on are the statistics showing the increasing partisan gap, explicit or implicit political loyalty tests and lastly the large minority on both sides that see the other as immoral. None of this screams respect, common ground and cooperation of which all are a requisite for a healthy functioning democracy.

Ramaswamy has been the target of several jabs already tonight.
Here are key things to know about the candidate

From CNN's Brian Rokus, Eric Bradner, Kit Maher and David Wright

Former biotech executive Vivek Ramaswamy speaks as former Arkansas Gov. Asa Hutchinson, former New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, former Vice President Mike Pence, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, former South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley, Sen. Tim Scott and North Dakota Gov. Doug Burgum listen at the first Republican candidates' debate of the 2024 presidential campaign in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, on Wednesday. Brian Snyder/Reuters

Entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy has several headed exchanges on the debate stage already with other GOP candidates.

Here are some key things to know about the candidate:

Ramaswamy is a biotech and health care entrepreneur who has written two books, “Nation of Victims: Identity Politics, the Death of Merit, and the Path Back to Excellence” and “Woke, Inc.: Inside Corporate America’s Social Justice Scam.”

“To put America first, we need to rediscover what America is. That’s why I am running for president,” Ramaswamy wrote in a Wall Street Journal editorial earlier this year. “I am launching not only a political campaign but a cultural movement to create a new American Dream—one that is not only about money but about the unapologetic pursuit of excellence.”

“We embrace secular religions like climatism, Covidism and gender ideology to satisfy our need for meaning, yet we can’t answer what it means to be an American,” Ramaswamy wrote in the Journal.

“The Republican Party’s top priority should be to fill this void with an inspiring national identity that dilutes the woke agenda to irrelevance,” he continued.

The editorial also called for securing the border, eliminating affirmative action and repealing civil service protection for federal employees.

In Republican primary polls, Ramaswamy is competitive with seasoned politicians, though still in single figures and far behind Trump.

The tech entrepreneur posted a video of himself shirtless, practicing tennis, on Monday in a tweet he described as his debate prep.

He has also made appearances on the sorts of liberal media programs that many Republican contenders skip, such as a podcast with HBO host Bill Maher. A memo by a pro-DeSantis super PAC made public last week advised the Florida governor to attack Ramaswamy, an indication of the 38-year-old’s rise in the race./

I like to think that someday we may mature as a society and make it possible. Unfortunately we currently seem to be devolving rather than maturing.

Trump's refusal to engage is based upon his handlers convincing him that allowing Republican voters a direct comparison with his opponents would not serve him well. The last time he debated face-to-face, another elderly man whooped him.

    Screen Shot 2023-08-24 at 4.37.33 PM.png

Fortunately, his demonstrated demurral from such events, along with his exploiting legal obligations as opportunities for strident bluster, demonstrate that his right to speedy trials are in no way impaired by his determination to be a recidivist in 2024.

In deference to one of Trump's indicted co-conspirators, Kenneth 'Cheesy' Chesebro, District Attorney Willis has suggested an Oct. 23 trial date for all 19 defendants in the case.

The October date is four months earlier than the one Willis initially suggested for the trial over whether Trump and others participated in a criminal conspiracy to overturn Georgia’s 2020 election results...

If Willis’s proposal is accepted by a judge, Trump’s Georgia trial would become the first of his four criminal cases to be heard by a jury.

Trump is facing numerous upcoming court dates. A March 25 trial date is set in Trump’s New York hush money case, and a May 20 date is set for the federal case probing his handling of classified documents.

Special counsel Jack Smith has also requested a Jan. 2 trial date in his election interference case, with a Washington-based judge set to review the matter Monday.

His extensive history of encounters with the law confirm that Trump goes to great lengths to conceal evidence and gag witnesses. When those stratagems fail, he tries to contrive endless excuses for postponing the inevitable.

I don't think he'll be successful in indefinitely avoiding justice this time.

We all should get a laugh out of any of the BS promises that some POTUS wannabe politicians make as to what they would do on their first day in office. The Trumpocity said that he would sign an order to cancel out Obama care on the first afternoon he is in inaugurated. True. On the second day he will build a wall between US and Mexico. On the third day he will sign an order that it will only rain at night and only between midnight and 5 in the morning. On the fourth day he will outlaw cancer. On the fifth day he will sign a law making all children in all schools pledge allegiance to him and only him as the grand poo poo leader of all the nations of the world. On the sixth day he will sign an order that he poops gold nuggets and that Giuliani will collect the nuggets . On the seventh day he will rest at Mar A Logo.

Post a link to where Trump made those promises then. Why do you think for a moment I would go to MAGA rallies? I've loathed Trump since the mid 1980s.

It is well documented that Trump promised item one and he also promised to build a wall on the southern border and he even promised that Mexico will pay for it. If you do realize that items 3 thru 7 are obvious jokes I don’t know how to break it to you. Do you really think that Trump said he will rest on the seventh day thus keeping the Sabbath Day holy?

LOL-- we believe science, about threats to our lives and to our species, just to "fill the void," in our lives.

*Vivek is straight up advocating a government instituted plan of National Identity-- just like in Nazi Germany! And the point of this, is to "dilute the woke agenda"-- so we know it won't be a multicultural national identity. Could he be suggesting a White Christian Nationality, even though he isn't what most here would consider white, and probably not Christian, either?

The guy is as un-American as they come.
Watching and listening to him speak shows an arrogant, bullshiting political whore for votes.
He's frightening to say the least and damn creepy.

“Cancel Juneteenth or one of the other useless ones we made up,” Ramaswamy said. “You can't have everything be a holiday, but we'll cancel one of the other ones and make Election Day a holiday.” In 2021, President Biden signed legislation declaring June 19, or Juneteenth, a federal holiday.Aug 7, 2023

If you ONLY heard what Vivek had to say without seeing him or knowing his name he is just another white male racist politician.

There are two things that are going to hurt him with the MAGAts.

He is Hindu and a vegetarian.

Can you just see him asking good old boys at a BBQ for their votes?

He will be knocked out because he won't have the support he needs in the primary.

    Why not cancel Columbus Day?

I've been told that Christie said afterward, get this, that when asked to raise their hands to show they would support Trump, Christie was raising his hand, to object to the question. Just consider the intellectual level, of that response-- he could think of no other way to object, other than to do the exact thing they were asked to do, to show agreement. Or, I suppose, he could be completely full of feces, and just wants to have it both ways (like the average, national Republican politician).

    EDIT ADD:

Well this is why so many Repub politicians are more conciliatory towards Putin-- they think in a similar way! Why should the feelings of the Mexican government even been given the show of having any importance, if we want to start bombing some part of their country? We're America, damnit! To DeSantis, that apparently means that we needn't do the analysis, to predict if military action would even solve the problem, before we start firing missiles. It would also appear to mean that DeSantis would believe he needn't get Congressional approval, for such an open ended operation.
