She was wrong, (for not being accurate) and her accusers are also wrong, because, they, too, are not accurate.

In a campaign stop, she was asked about what she believed was the reason for the civil war.

She danced around the question and did not mention slavery, though every one cringed that she didn't mention it, because apparently everyone believes this to be the reason for the war.

But, in fact, it's false. In a letter sent to Horace Greeley, who publicly made some assumptions about Lincoln and the war, the letter was published in the NYTimes, Lincoln sought to clarify his reason for the war, and it WAS NOT TO FREE THE SLAVES, though that was a collateral objective but only insofar as it served to save the union.

The south wanted to secede, and his objective was to keep the Union intact, to 'save the union.' The ONLY reason he sought to free the slaves was because it was necessary to save the union. If it weren't true, he wouldn't have bothered. In other words, his objective wasn't some high minded stuff about 'all men are equal' and therefore, should be free.

    and he says so..........

    Read it for yourself:
    https://www.abrahamlincolnonline.org/lincoln/speeches/greeley.htm

...My paramount object in this struggle is to save the Union, and is not either to save or to destroy slavery. If I could save the Union without freeing any slave I would do it, and if I could save it by freeing all the slaves I would do it; and if I could save it by freeing some and leaving others alone I would also do that. What I do about slavery, and the colored race, I do because I believe it helps to save the Union; and what I forbear, I forbear because I do not believe it would help to save the Union. I shall do less whenever I shall believe what I am doing hurts the cause, and I shall do more whenever I shall believe doing more will help the cause. ...

    But, he also wrote:

I intend no modification of my oft-expressed personal wish that all men every where could be free.

He did believe blacks should be free, but it WAS NOT the reason for the war.

Ah Nikki, she was not expecting that specific question and she handled it quite stupidly. These "other" candidates are so scared to offend Trump's base regarding anything, they end up doing and saying stupid ****. Let's face it, she's still banking on Trump being convicted before or banned from running. Either that or she will do backflips to be Veep.....this last one makes no sense to me but WTF knows. If Trump wins (sign of the cross ;)) and she became Veep, she'd likely be pre-emptively hung at some point in the next ten years....

It was a political statement, do you understand what the word abolition stands for at that time.

Haley is a neocon farce. The Civil War was over slavery.

I love her answer - she said:
Yes, government doesn’t need to tell us how to live our life, they don’t need to tell us what you can and can’t
do. We need to have freedom to buy arms, but not freedom to perform abortions or to import cheaper medicine from overseas. She sounds like a perfect candidate!

Southerners don’t share the same view as Yankees. For them it was about States rights. Yankees say it was about slavery. The questioner was probably a plant.

DeSantis: What Did You Think of Haley's 'Incomprehensible Word Salad About The Cause Of The Civil War?

'Haley “is not a candidate that’s ready for primetime. And she’s gotten a pretty free ride from a lot of the corporate press. The minute that she faces any type of scrutiny, she tends to cave and I think that that’s what you saw yesterday.'

Oh yeah, big time waffler. No Straight Talk Express From The neocon Princess.

“Not that difficult to identify and acknowledge the role slavery played in the Civil War, and yet that seemed to be something that was really difficult. And I don’t even know what she was saying."

“I know she’s trying to clean it up. I know she’s tried to blame a Democrat plant…I mean, you’re gonna get asked a lot of tough questions — that’s just the nature of this business. And I think that she showed time and time again that when the lights get hot that she will wilt under pressure, and that was a good example last night.”

    (Ace of Spades)

    She's a caver.

Arguing about the cause of the civil war is a waste of time. It cannot be pinned down to one or two specific causes and no matter what you say caused it, it will be wrong according to someone else. I have quit expressing my opinion on the subject because the argument is never concluded.

The cause of secession was slavery. Hands-down. She should have had the courage to admit that instead of hiding behind historical revisionism.

Even that is too generous. They didn't want their own states to have the "right" to make the determination about being slave or free. ALL of their own states HAD to be slaves states. They never gave a **** about states' rights. ALL they cared about was slavery.

Whoever told you that was an idiot, a liar, or both. Southerners AT THE TIME shared the same view as the Yankees. For them it was about slavery. THEY said it was about slavery even more eagerly than the Yankees did. And they didn't need any "plant." They volunteered this information repeatedly.

The letter by Lincoln states it clearly.

All you have to do is read it.

You don't even have to go to Lincoln. The South made their intentions clear in their own writings.

Yes, the secession movement was about slavery. But Lincoln's reason for the war was to save the union, prevent secession, and he stated in that letter, that if he could have saved the union without ending slavery, he would have done so.

And that was my point. The primary motivation for the war was to end the secession, not to free the slaves.

Agreed. The North went into the war to preserve the Union. The South went to war to preserve slavery. Once it became clear that there was no preserving the Union without ending slavery (something Lincoln predicted would happen), the Union became more about ending slavery

Slavery was not the reason for the war but who cares. What purpose did the question serve? Do people think Haley will bring back slavery if elected?

That is the reason Lincoln went to war. Why did each of the individual states decide to go to war?

I don't care for Haley, but to criticize her about something that happened 150 years ago and a point she didn't mention is "dancing on the head of a pin". Enough already about slavery. I would rather hear the candidates talk about what they plan for their first day in office.

WATCH: Boy Finishes Off Nikki Haley's Bad 24 Hours With Mocking Question Comparing Her to John Kerry

First she blew a question on Slavery,

Then she blew the clean up by blaming others. Haley's Explanation for Civil War Question Snafu: 'A Democrat Plant' Made Me Do It

But then again on Thursday, she got a question that put her on the spot by a nine-year-old boy.

“Chris Christie thinks you’re a flip-flopper on the Donald Trump issue, and honestly, I agree with him. You’re basically the new John Kerry,” the child told Haley in the ski town of North Conway as the audience laughed. “How can you change your opinion like that in just eight years, and will you pardon Donald Trump?”

'Haley held it together, with a smile frozen on her face, but she couldn't have anticipated getting that kind of a question from a nine-year-old.'

First, she asked if his last name was Ramaswamy [not really], 'said that she agreed with a lot of Trump's policies but didn't think he was the right person going forward, saying, “We can’t handle the chaos anymore.”' She then attacked Chris Christie, saying he was "obsessed" with attacking Trump, and scolded the young boy for comparing her to Kerry.'

The crowd was laughing at her, which usually means it's not going well.
